For•what seemed an eternity, I'd
avoid going near my parents'
bedroom. I'd just -close my eyes
and pretend that part of.our house
didn't exist. But in the back of my
mind I always knew it was there,
and what lay tucked away under
the bed and in the closet - Christ-
mas presents.
It was sheer torture for my little
girl mind, and as I marked off the
days until December 25, my
defences weakened.
And then, when I was certain I
would surely die of curiousity and
miss Christmas altogether, I'd
tiptoe into the room that held so
many secrets.
Like an obsession taking control,
my stomach would start churning
'and my heart would send pounding
impulses through my body as my
shaking hands opened the closet
door.
My strange little logic reasoned
that this had -to be done, I had to
peek, or surely I would never lead a
normal life again.
Carefully, oh so carefully, I'd
shake, and squeeze the parcels and
when worse came to worse, lift the
lid of the boxes to see what sur-
prises they held.
And as suddenly as the obsession
struck, it would vanish. My in-
satiable curiousity would settle,
leaving nothing but shame and
guilty feelings.
LuNever one to dwell on the past,
I'd carry on counting off the days
ntil December 25, munch on
shortbread cookies, try to
remember the -words to the 12 Days
of Christmas and pluck candy
canes off the tree. And all the while
I'd pray. that Gtid and Santa Claus.
hadn't seen my evil deed.
And still my sneek preview never
seemed to take away from the
excitment of the day. After a
sleepless night, my sister and I had
would dash downstairs to the
heavenly smell of roasting turkey
and the overwhelming sight of
brightly wrapped parcels under the
tree.
Over the years, Christmas hasn't
changed ;much. For as,long as I can
remember, Christmas at the
McPhee house has always been
celebrated in the same way.
Tradition in our family calls for
morning present opening, an af-
ternoon of singing and a 3 pm
dinner, complete with mum's
soggy dressing.
And ` muni still hides the
Christmas presents under the bed
and in the closet, but I'm happy to
_say that I no longer peek.
A mature calm has settled over
this 25 -year-old body and at last I
am able to exert some self-control
and wait until the presents are
under the tree and ready to open.
But still it's not easy, Christmas
is still my favorite time of year and
I just love getting and giving
presents. So it's wise to still take
precautions .mum, you never know
when my curiousity will get the
best of me.

the closed sessions were not being
abused and were a necessary part of
boar&buslness.
"There ,are things discussed in
committee and that's where they
belong," he said. "We can't change
that because we have to protect our
personnel." _
Goderich trustee, Dave Gower, said
the closed session should be con-
ducted at the conclusion of the regular
board meeting and the subjects to
be discussed in the closed session
should be listed.
"It is normal to state the purpose of
going into a closed session but here
it's done every month," he said.
"Only the trustees know what the
Subject is and at the end a blanket
statement covers all motions. It
wears the most
fashionable of clothes,
and has met many new
people, all while main-
taining a family and a
home.
The founder of the firm,
Mary Kay Ash, age
unknown and never to be
known, stresses to her
people that family and
would be more open to the public if
there was a list of what was to be
discussed."
Eugene Frayne said there was no
purpose to Gower's suggestions and
that all closed session motions were
included in the minutes.
Personnel Relations Administrator,
Peter Gryseels, said time was needed
to notify, personnel if termination of a
contract was involved.
"If an employee reads it in the local
press the next day it doesn't give us
time to talk to them," he said. "If it is
not public until a month later we have
the time to notify employees of the
changes."
One trustee said a board employee
read about a change in status in the
newspaper before being notified by
the board.
