KINCARDINE - Despite
intensive scientific
research, breast cancer
kills more women in their
middle years than any
other cause, says a study.
To help fight. the.
inevitability of this
statistic, 125 local women
from Kincardine to
Ripley volunteered to
take part in a national
breast screening study.
Without hesitation,
they `boarded` ` four
separate buses
throughout September to
head for. Mount Sinai
Hospital 'in Toronto
where the study is taking
place.
Half the group of
volunteers received
thorough instruction in
breast self examination
and will continue to take
part in the study by filling
in questionaires every
year.
The other half of the
group received the in-
struction, followed by a
mammogram.. Those
volunteers, as well as
those over 50 years of
age, will return to the
clinic every year for five
years.
The study is looking for
a detecton method that
will give the earliest
possible warning of the
presence of cancer tissue.
