Monday, September 15, was the first meeting of the pack which began -witir-ga-mes :-Instruction to the new Cubs, (CHUMS) about Grand Howl and its meaning as well as the meaning of the white scarf ;as given. Upcoming ev .al. iVeii. a hike on September 28 to Hullett Conservation Area, and cgok-out,. while on eptember 29, two films - Mowgli's Brothers and Rikki Tikki Tave will be shown. at the regular meeting. The Cubs will also be marching in .the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Sunday School on October 5 at the Vanastra Christian Church. Permission slips will be sent to ,parents shortly for these events. Scouts Scouts has not been started in Vanastra this year because there's no Scout Master. This position must be filled by a 21 -year-old with ex- perience •with the out- doors, • camping and working with boys. , If anyone in Tucker - smith Township is in- terested in becoming a Scout Master or leader, please contact Clem Goulding at 482-3764 of the Group Parent after 5 p.m. Brownies New Tweenies this year are Joan McLachlan, Kim Dixon, Robin Cain, Kristine Fowlie, and Cathy Stone. Returning Brownies are Laura Fowlie, Jennifer Pollock, Susan and Sandy Ryan, Shelly Bonte-Gelok., Kathy Low and Shelly Stone. At their first meeting, the Tweenies were taught the pack songs and the officialopening and closing of meetings. The Brownies will also be marching in the 200th Birthday of the formation of Sunday School on Sunday, October 5 at the Vanastra Christian Church. Permission slips to parents will be sent home. Guides New Guides this year include Jean Bernard, Alison Jeacock, Terri Evans, Teresa Raithby, Tammy Dowell, Heather Brownridge, Kerri-Anne Jerome. The first meeting of the year was opened with gal es and then the girls went into their patrols where they elected their own patrol leader and seconder. The meeting ended with campfire. They meet on Wed- nesdays at the Vanastra Christian Church from 7 to 9p.m. New menaers in this group are Dawn McLeod, Penny Lee Lewis, Chris Davis, Kathryn Ann Davis and Pain Brownridge. Guider is Marion Hohner and Carol Mcllveen. At their first meeting the Pathfinders elected a treasurer, Kathy Davis; -council -ehairmarr,--Pard- Brownridge; phone committee, and recreation and social , person, Dawn McLeod and secretary, Penny Lewis. They played flags ,and catch ball for their games. Lioness The Vanastra Recreation Centre was transported back in time to the 1950s On Saturday evening for the Vanastra and District Lioness' First Anniversary '50s Dance. The bobby-soxers and big-boppers were out in full force for a real fun night and mus c yaried from Elvis to tle Everly Brothers to co try and western. A bubble gum blowing contest was won by Freda Hill. of .,Bayfield with a close second by Beverly Walsh of Clinton. They didn't have , much com- petition though, as one of the other contestants, Lioness Myrna Smith of Vanastra said, "It's been years since I've done this!" The Fonz look -a -like contest was won by Tony Jeacock of Vanastra and the Laverne look -a -like contest was won by Lion Tony Jeacoc,k • of Vanastra and • the Laverne look -a -like contest was won by Liz Stephens of the Lioness Club of Exeter. The best rock and rollers of the evening were Jim and Meryl Thomas who won Brylcreem and bobby sox Tor their efforts. The raffle ticket„ winner, was Myrna Smith of Vanastra and Denver Grant of 1r • Strathroy won the door prize - a lovetypiant. The Lioness Club of Vanastr a wishes to thank Lioness Joan Merner and her husband Jack of Hayfield; Lioness Dorothy Glazier and her husband Lion Gerry of Woodstock and Lioness Liz Stephens and her husband Lion John of Exeter for supporting their dance. Also thanks to those from our com- munity and surrounding communities who' gave their support. Proceeds from the dance will be going towards com- munity projects. —The Llohe-s-s-Club -will-- be catering to the Lions dinner meeting on October 1. The Lioness will be having their own dinner meeting on October 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Centre in the Day CareRoom. Glimpses Get -well wishes go to John Bjerg after his surgery in Stratford General Hospital. A baby shower was held for Elaine Sherban and son Paul Kyle Sherban on Tuesday evening at the Vamistra Recreation Centre. Get -well wishes are sent out to Beverly Vale who is in University Hospital in London. Stewart and Jean McLean and family were visiting Don and Betty McLean for the weekend. On September 19th Wayne -Riley of, the Vanastra and District Lions Club celebrated his birthday. The community ex- tends a get -well wish to Gordon Bernard after his surgery in London Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Carpenter had their daughter and ,son-in-law and granddaughter from Toronto for the weekend. Wayne and Jan Ferguson attended a 25th wedding anniversary for Wally and Alva Motz at the Bridgeport Rod and Gun Club on Saturday. Marion Nolan from Seaforth visited her sister Shirley McLean for the weOkend. acing and sin Vanastra Public School " Two clubs got rolling this week at the Vanastra Public School. The cross country team has been 'practising every day with. Mr. Nicholls and the junior choir members had their first practice with Mrs. Cooper. Many other clubs and activities have been scheduled for later on in the school year'. The school staff will be involved in professional activity exercises Thursday evening and all day Friday. Parents are reminded that the school will not be open all day Friday. Parents are reminded that the schdp1 will not be open on Friday for classes because of thiS. On. Thursday evening the staff will be joining the Huron Cen- tennial SchOol staff and will be looking at Huron County Board of Education policies. On Friday several staff members will be at- tending workshops at other schools while the remainder will be working on things at our own school. All activities scheduled for Friday have been designed to make each and every one of us &just a little better job in the future. One of the things that this staff will be looking at again this yeartwill be the underlying aims and objectives for the school - in other words - the things g start There's been lots of whooping and drum banging at the Vanastra Day Care Centre this past week as youngsters learned about Indians and their culture. (Shelley McPhee photo) Special service planned On October 5, at 10 a.m. the anniversary of the first Sunday School class held in London, England 200 years ago will be celebrated by , the Vanastra congregation. A .,41.1.10. -.birthday party which Will take the place of our regular worship service is planned. Everyone is invited to dress up in 18th century clothes, join in the. singing of old and new Sunday School songs, picture ,drawing contest with prizes, special music, film. or slides, birthday cake, and after the program, join in soup and sandwich pot luck meal. The program will begin with marching in of the Cubs, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Lions and Lioness with their flags and banners. The Sunday School children are busy making birthday ,presents for the church and area residents and their families are invited to attend and,participate in this celebration. Please bring along a •plate of sandwiches, and enough soup to feed your own family. Soup and refresh- ments will be prepared and provided at the church. Curling Club The Vanastra Curling Club will be 'holding a dance on Saturday, October 4 at the Vanastra Recreation Centre at 9 p.m: with lunch provided. Tickets are available from any member or at the , Vanastra Factory Outlet. Proceeds will go to the Curtin Club renovations. Fees for the 1980-81 season which runs ap- proximately from November to April are : men, $70; ladies, $60; couple, $125:00; and student, $25. Tuckersmith Day Nursery The Tuckersmith ,Day Nursery has been very busy this past week ex- ploring the. theme of Indians. The children made beads from paper strips and then -threaded them for necklaces. They all made Indian drums out of plastic on cigarette tins; Indian costumes from burlap sacks and headbands.
