District of. "Pennsylvania Dutch" and
United Empire Loyalist stock,
He learned the. carding business. at
Merfitton near St. Catharines and later
molted to Huttonsville, Peel County where
he had. a saw mill.
In 1859 he married Mary Jane Gordoh of
Churchville, Peel County and they had .a
family of three, Adrian, Jeannie (Mrs. Dr.
Ben Case) and Diana.
In.1862 they came to Dungannon where
Thomas built a carding mill next to J.
Saunby's grist mill on Nine Mile River, a
f quarter mile north of thefourth concession.
He went into joint ownership with Saunby
to build a dam to supply water power to both
mills but unfortunately, they could not
always agree on a fair division of the power,
especially. in times of iow-waterand- -they----w
were not always on the best terms.
As time went on, factory yarn and cloth
took the place of home spinning and weav-
ing. Disher was finally forced .to close down,
although the }mill with its machinery was not
demolished until 1905.
About 1880 he bought out `John Runce.
man's grist and saw mill further down the
river. A cider mill was operated in the fall for
many years from the power in the saw mill.
Disher .operated the mill for many years
along with his son, Adrian and later with
Adrian's sons until the property was sold to
Case Black in 1918.
The creamery, The River Cedar Valley
Creamery Company, was built on Disher
property a short distance along the mill road
from the fourth concession bridge with
Adrian in partnership with a man from Blyth
and operated by Mike and Barney Ben-
ninger. It ran successfully for several years
but unfortunately burnt down in .1917 and

Thomas died in 1924 at the age of 98 and
Adrian died in 1941 at the age of 81.
