Middleton news Man runs out of gas twice By Blanche Peeves Morning Prayer was held in St. James Church Middleton on Sunday ,morning when Rev. Wm. Bennett spoke on "why there are no more miracles". Edward Wise received the offering and Mr. and Mrs. Stone were guests at the morning service. Next Sunday, Holy Communion will be celebrated in St., James at 11:15 a.m. Church care for the month of August will be Vera Hudie and Blanche DeeveS. The annual Gaililean service and picnic will be held on August 10 at 11:15 a.m. at Stewart Mid- dleton's Park. The Huron Church camp will lead in the singing. Father Blair Dixon will speak. The Pioneer Park evening_ service will be held on August 17 at 7 p.m. Social notes' A certain young man Qn his way to work last Thursday ran out of gas at the bottom of the hill at Deeves, was helped with gas. On his way home from work, that evening he ran out of gas again but at the top .of the hill. Once again he was helped and he made it home for supper, Edward and Lois Wise recently enjoyed a 10 -day trip to Newfoundland and St. Pierre. A few points of 'interest were the lovely old city -of St. Johns, Signal Hill, the many little fishing villages • of the Eastport Peninsula and Salvage, the beautiful scenery of mountains and the bays in Grosse Morne National Park. .The experience of seeing icebergs near the Twillingate along with the French Island of St. Pierre with quaint. boutiques, cafes end can ean girls and the frien- dlinesss of the people made for a fantastic holiday. The men of the 14th concession had a busy weekend fighting off packs of dogs. One far- mer found four dogs with his cattle Saturday morning. On Sunday morning, the dogs were heard again and this time five dogs were in another farmer's cattle. Also.they -have the worry of • rabid foxes s- 7000 lb. 4x 4 truck class 'Jim Middleton placed 2nd, Bill Turner 3rd and Bob Langendoen 4th. Ralph Thede of Port Elgin beat them all by placing first. Last Sunday July 27, there were seven trucks entered in the same class at the Thorndale pulls. The pullers juggled the placings in a slightly different order with Jim Middleton coming first with a full pull of 300 ft. Ralph Thede ,placed second with a 278 ft. pull, Bill Turner 3rd with 245 ft. and Bob . Langendoen 5th with a 146 ft. pull. On Saturday, July 26, Jim Middleton entered in the Canadian Tractor Pullers Assoc. 6500 lb. open 4 x 4 truck class held at Ridgetown where he pulled 286'3", placing first. "Pulling" en- thusiasm is mounting as they look forward to the next W.O.T.P.A. pull at Clifford on Monday Aug. 4. Program readings were given by Marg Lohman and Myrtle Fairservice. By Shelley McPhee A lively personality and a respected minister, Rev. Harold Snell died in University Hospital, London on July 19. The 75 -year-old was known to people from Auburn to' London and across Canada as well during the four decades he preached God's word. • Mr. Snell was born in Londesboro in January 1906 to Humphrey Snell and the former Elizabeth Hawthorne. He attended SS No. 5 and SS No, 10 schools in Hullett Township. Mr. Snell considered going into farming, but decided he wanted to help to a greater extent and in 1926 left to attend university in Toronto. He graduated in 1930 with a BA and taught at a boys' school for three years. In 1933 Mr. Snell continued his studies and went to Queen's University in Kingston, graduated from theological college and was ordained in 1936. Mr. Snell started his ministry in Saskatchewan, but returned to Ontario after one', year and served the 'United Church ongregation in Ethel farsix years. He went on to Auburn where he was minister for -ft:kW years and then was calledAo St.°James Church, now Exeter United, where he worked for 12 years, In 1959 he went on to Riverside Church in London'and returned to Exeter to serve as assistant minister before retiring four years age. Public relations was always an important -concern and interest of Mr. Snell's and he once said, "I've struggled with my abilities to know people. Not some people, butall people." Undoubtedly, many people will miss Mr. Snell's broad smile and voice that held congregation's at- tention with little difficulty. Mr.. Snell was married in Qntario Street United Church in Clinton in 1936 and his wife, the former Jean Plumsteel, survives him. He is also survived by a son Peter or London, a sister, Mrs. Albert Sims, of Kelowna,- B.C. and brothers Helmer of •Seaforth, Donald of Waterloo and James of Ballymote. Two, grandchildren also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, two sons Roger and Gordon and a brother Gordon. . Mr. Snell's body rested at the Hopper -Hockey Funeral Home in Exeter and funeral services were held in the Exeter United Church on July 22. Rev. Yvonne was a former resident of Goderich Township and daughter of Hendricks. The local truck pulling. boys are off and pulling again this year.
