A lively personality and a respected minister, Rev.
Harold Snell died in University Hospital, London on
July 19.
The 75 -year-old was known to people from Auburn to'
London and across Canada as well during the four
decades he preached God's word. •
Mr. Snell was born in Londesboro in January 1906 to
Humphrey Snell and the former Elizabeth Hawthorne.
He attended SS No. 5 and SS No, 10 schools in Hullett
Township.
Mr. Snell considered going into farming, but decided
he wanted to help to a greater extent and in 1926 left to
attend university in Toronto. He graduated in 1930
with a BA and taught at a boys' school for three years.
In 1933 Mr. Snell continued his studies and went to
Queen's University in Kingston, graduated from
theological college and was ordained in 1936.
Mr. Snell started his ministry in Saskatchewan, but
returned to Ontario after one', year and served the
'United Church ongregation in Ethel farsix years.
He went on to Auburn where he was minister for
-ft:kW years and then was calledAo St.°James Church,
now Exeter United, where he worked for 12 years, In
1959 he went on to Riverside Church in London'and
returned to Exeter to serve as assistant minister
before retiring four years age.
Public relations was always an important -concern
and interest of Mr. Snell's and he once said, "I've
struggled with my abilities to know people. Not some
people, butall people."
Undoubtedly, many people will miss Mr. Snell's
broad smile and voice that held congregation's at-
tention with little difficulty.
Mr.. Snell was married in Qntario Street United
Church in Clinton in 1936 and his wife, the former Jean
Plumsteel, survives him. He is also survived by a son
Peter or London, a sister, Mrs. Albert Sims, of
Kelowna,- B.C. and brothers Helmer of •Seaforth,
Donald of Waterloo and James of Ballymote. Two,
grandchildren also survive him.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sons Roger
and Gordon and a brother Gordon.
. Mr. Snell's body rested at the Hopper -Hockey
Funeral Home in Exeter and funeral services were
held in the Exeter United Church on July 22. Rev.
James Grant Ming officiated at the service and in-
terment followed in Ball's Cemetery, Auburn.
