An average of 60 children are attending daily. At 9 a.m. the Children gather in the church auditorium for a half hour of singing under the direction of Lorne Wolf with Evelyn Mantel at the piano. The three church volunteer workers, Marlene Vander Ploeg,, Liz Vedder and _lY RCM:a Van M .s t .. are also helping out with the musical part. Margaret plays the guitar and together the girls lead, the children in action songs like "The tree song" and many. other favourites. The three church volunteers Mark Baker, right, set the rules and off they went. Nearly two dozen. Varna youngsters come out each Thursday to take part in a daylong Playground Day program. Organized by the Vanastra Recreation Centre, Mark, Jeff Baech1er and Bonnie McPhail are offering weekly Playground Days at Varna, Egmondviile and Vanastra. Teachers in this year's V.B.S. are June Jeacock, Kathleen Stone, Ronda Bjerg, • Elaine Sherban and Rose Hummel. Helpers are Theresa and Donna Desjardins, Melinda Mantel, Lisa McCarty. In charge of the refreshments are July Embling and Nancy Linton. A daily supply of freshly baked and delicious cookies are provided by the.Lionesses and congregational members. All friends and neighbours are in- vited to this special program. A potluck dinner is planned following the service. After the dinner games will be organized for everyone on the church lawn either in the sun or in the shades of the trees. Sivithrnerso: to a good start museuxn and tugboat rides. Everyone took a swim in the lake and then had lunch. The museum tour was a complete success as everyone had a great time. Pre-school nursery It was ,a success thugh we only had four children the first ,week. The next two weeks we will not be operating due to the Bible school. Playground Programs Last Monday, July 14, ---at-Vanastra-the-kids-had-- a -at Vanas .. � the kids had—., VYi µ 4.iV ifi�4V a swim meet. A great number of children showed up to this event, and they had • a number of relays and games which were to encourage the child's confidence in the water. The • trip of the week was to Stratford, where the children were given a guided tour. ,• of McDonald's and they also had their lunch there which everyone stuffed themselves. After the rain stopped they went `to the park at the Shakespearean Festival Theatre, where the children played on 'a huge playground climber which for example had three different slides, two swing tires and much more. „Next_ . they. headed . for the paddle boat rides - where -ides 'where the children en- joyed an hour of hard labour trying to paddle the boats. Personal Welcome home to Mr.. and Mrs. Charlie Handy and Mr. and Mrs. Dave Dunsmore after their vacation. Vanastra swimmers did -Well for their first Novice swimming race of the .season for the local area of .the Lake . Huron Zone Recreation •As§ociation (LHZRA). Over 100 swimmers from Vanastra, Goderich, Mitchell, Seaforth, and Exeter coffipeted Saturday morning, July 12, at the Exeter and District Swimming Pool. Although Vanastra had only 11 members,they earned 82 points. The standings of the other teams were: Goderich 245; Exeter 192; Seaforth 163.; and Mitchell 60 points. Seda Unsal led the Vanastra team with first place finishes in the open butterfly (120 yd) and back crawl (120 yd) and a secondplace finish in the front crawl (120 yd). Seda was also part of the open medley relay team (240 yd) that won a first place finish. Other team ° members contributing to the good effort were; 'open - Laureen Craik, Renee Lehnen, Chris MacDonald; age 13-14 - Renee Lehnen; age 11-12 Michele Aunger, Monique Aunger, Christa Lehnen, Kerry Schmidt, age 9-10 - Lori Brandon, Susan Lehnen; Mary Mellor. The aim of LHZRA is to encourage participation in swimming. The point system of 7,5,4,3,2,1, for first to sixth place em- phasizes this par- ticipation. For example, Goderich .had about__ 50 swimmers participating and :coz(sequerrxjy did very well with team points. Vanastra -needs more Novice racers (18 years of age and under) . Practices are Monday 4:30 to 5 p.m.; Wed= nesda.y4:30to5p.m.and Thursday 4:30 to 5:30 n m Swim teamdoes better The second swim meet of the local Lake Duron Zone Recreation Association (LHZRA) was held, at Goderich, Saturday afternoon, July 19. This meet. Vanastra had strong efforts from the boys section with John Baker, Chris Baker and Grey Schnidl giving strong performances. Although Vanastra was still\ in fourth place, we gained 50 points more than last week. Team standings were: Goderich 265, Seaforth • 160, Mitchell 156, Vanastra 137, Exeter 133. All team members of Vanastra placed fourth or higher sgxhetimes out of a total of 10 competitors. The 16 members of Vanastra for this meet were: Kathy Wallace, Stephanie Durnin, Michele Aunger, Susan Lehnen, Christa Lehnen, Renee Lehnen, Mary Mellor, Lori Brandon, ' Laureen ` Craig, Kerry Schmidt, Seda Unsal, Duane Durnin, Joel Aunger, John Baker, Chris Baker, Greg Sch- midt. The next swim meet will be held at Vanastra Recreation Centre on Saturday July 26, 1980 at 9 a.m. Spectators are welcome. The owner of Haberer Concrete Van3ts is a nine year . veteran of Zurich council with seven of those as reeve. Reeve Haberer said he decided to run for warden as it would tie in nicely ' with Zurich's 125th._ an- niversary which takes places in 1981. If elected, Reeve' Haberer would be the first warden from, Zurich and would Also be among a select group of wardens in recent years wfio have not `represented the townships.
