Profits from beans
Beans are the number two vegetable in popularity, second only
tii'tomatoes. From the profit standpoint, beans rank eighth among
garden vegetables. This is not to say that beans are not worth
growing. Oh the contrary, garden fresh beans offer such values
in nutrition and flavor that virtually all gardeners grow them.
Except where seasons are
short, climbing pole beans
deliver the most value per sq.
ft. Bush beans give pole types
a run for the money, especially
when they are interplanted
with quick growing salad
greens. Lima beans compete
in value only in long season
areas where they will, pro
duce during hot weather. .
Three different pod colors are
available in snap beans:
green, golden wax and pur
ple. All have different
flavors. You can also choose
flat pods for slicing into
French ht an, or round pods.

You can increase the value of
your bean c ropy by preven•
tat ive measures that keep
vines or hushes in production
longer. A virus called "bean
mosaic" is the worst disease
problem in garden beans but
can be avoided or reduced by
selecting varieties that are
listed as "Mosaic Resistant."
Bean beetles are One of the
worst pests but can he con
trolled through sprays or
dusts recommended by your
County Agricultural Exten
sion Service. Some gardeners
find daily spraying with a
needle-sharp spray of water
effective in knocking off in
sects, eggs and disease
spores. Others use soap and
water sprays based on for
mulas published in organic
gardening articles.
Remove Mulches
Mulches placed around
plants last fall should be
removed in April to allow the
sunlight to warm and dry the
soil. Organic mulchescan be
added to the compost pile or
incorporated into the soil at
planting time.
Simple rules for success
• ',des , Spring is finally
here! And those of you, who
possess "green thumbs"
(and even those of you who
don't) will: soon be spending
much of your spare time in
the garden deciding where
you're going to plant the
petunias and snaking sure
Your: lawn and hedges look
respectable. When you' do,
remember that a garden
like any other work area -
has the potential fpr serious
injury. That's -why St. John
Ambulance is suggesting
these guidelines for gar-
deningsafety:
+ Keep your work area
clean and tidy.
• Don't use electrical
appliances in a wet or damp
area.
+ Store your power
garden tools in a high and
dry place.
+ Never force a tool to
work. faster than the speed
for which It was designed or
do.a job other than the one it
was intended for.
+ Don't carry an ap-
pliance by the cord, and
never yank the eord vlrhen

tacle: grasp the plug, not the
wire. Keep the cord away
from sharp edges, oil and
heat: ,..

sharp and clean for best and
safest performance.
Prunedeciduous trees now
Home gardeners who are
anxious to begin working in
the garden can start now by
pruning established
deciduous trees.
"Late March and early
April are ideal times to
-prune .ciduons..,. .tr gs.
because you can see the
overall shape of the' tree
easily without the leaves,"
says Bob Hamersma, of the
Horticultural Research
Institute of Ontario.
"However, wait until June to
prune maple and birtch
tree s."
Trees are grown in the
home landscape for their

`.`It. is_ also a good idea to -.
prune small branches which
cross other branches," says
Mr. Hamersma. "These
crossing branches can cause
problems later in the
growing season by rubbing
the bark off the neighboring
._ bract ch.

Shoots that are much
smaller than their main
branches should also be
taken out because they won't
develop well, nor, will they
contribute to the tree's
appearance.
When you prune trees,
remember that pruning
encourages growth.
Haphazard pruning can
result in sucker growth and
basal branching. Never
prune more than one-third of
the tree in one growing
season, because overpruning
c-auses reduced vigor.
"Make alLcuts flush to the
main branch," advises Mr.
Hamersma. "Stubs en-
courage disease because the
tree can't form a protective
callus on a stub wound. Make
good clean cuts using sharp
hand pruning shears, a long -
handled lopper, or a pruning
saw."
Disconnect an appliance
before servicing, changing
accessories, or lubricating.
,Follow the manufacturer's
directions for servicing the
appliance.

bare feet.
+ Keep proper footing and
balance at all times - don't
overreach.
+ Keep children a safe
distance away from your
work area.
+ Rake the lawn before

remove any objects hidde
in the grass. Such objects
could seriously injure
someone if they should fly
out of the machine.
+ Use equipment with the
stamp of approval of the
Canadian Standards
Association.
A "green thumb" is rather
nice to have - especially
when it remains connected to
your hand. Take a tip' from
St. John Ambulance and play
it safe this Spring when you
do your weekend gardening.
