Mighty Camp, an 11 - by steve cooke Flooded streams, warm rains, sap running in the trees and maple syrup production are all indications that spring has arrived, but to some people it means a lot more. These signs usually mean that in a few short weeks the smelt will be running, and trout season follows close behind. Seine and dip nets are dug, out of the basement along with the chest waders, and everything is made ready to.be.off at short notice.- For me,_that run of silvery fish is the real indication that summer is on its way. Another nice thing about a warm spring day -is that it's the perfect time to.go for a walk. After a long winter, it's a great tonic to just get out and stretch your legs. A walk down your favorite trout stream will let you examine it for any ice damage and prepare you for fishing when' the time comes. It's also agreat time to throw a few logs in to create a jam and provide more cover for the trout. If you're not a fisherman, take a stroll in a hardwood bush on that soft carpet of leaves. You'll proba1 1yY fiot'tce that squirrels are extra active as the search for that perfect spot to bear their young goes on..A few squirrel nesting boxes set up in trees will help them immeasurably, and leave you 'with the feeling that something wor- thwhile has been done. If you are interested, the Ministry of Natural Resources will supply you with plans to'construct these nesting sites out of old tires, or scrap lumber. Wherever you go for your walk, be sure to take along a basket or haversack, a small garden trowel and a guide to edible wild greens. New green shoots are popping up all over the place and it only takes a few minutes to gather a feed for the family. It might be wild onions or leeks in the hardwood,. tender cattail shoots along the edge of the swamp or a plateful of water cress - gathered from your trout stream, but whatever itis, you'll be sure to enjoy it. Fiddleheads are also a one time spring deal,- and now is the time to start watching for their appearance. There have been warnings issued about cancer causing agents contained in these greens, but they have been directed more towards oriental cultures where consumption is high. At one point I had decided to give them up completely, but I still find myself craving that one feed each spring. Even if you aren't a fisherperson, hunter, wild food gatherer or promoter, of wildlife-, the im- portant thing is to get out and take that walk anyway. Who knows, maybe you'll just enjoy it enough. to make the effort to do it again, and again, and again. Each time out you'll discover, a little more and before long, you might even find yourself using the words naturalist and con- servationist to describe your outdoor activities. That's when you'll know you are hooked on the greatest part of this life -- good old down to earth n-ature. Some of the more ardent golfers in Clinton just can't wait for the local courses to dry up, and have designed 'their own 9 -hole layout right here in Clinton. Here duffer Gary Haist drives off' the first tee on Rattenbury Street East, but his shot hooked and landed in Dr. Bowker's sand box. Caddie Shelley McPhee, however, doesn't look too im- pressed with the shot. Haist recovered from the sand trap, and parred the hole somewhere near Doug Cantelon's back door. Dresden outplayed ,.Goderich . in the progressively rowdy fourth game and won by a score of 7-4. Sailor captain Wayne Rau opened the game's scoring four minutes into the game by dumping an unassisted power - play goal past Dresden riet- minder Barry Mills while Bill Latimer was off for an elbowing offence. Four minutes later, Dresden replied with their first goal from Doug Easter and Rick Chin - nick. Dresden then went ahead in the first period on a goal from Dave Houston while Sailor Ken Meriam was in the box for a roughing penalty. The Sailors evened up the score to 2-2 at the 3:06 mark of the second period after Dan Colquhoun fired a shot past Mills. Ron Sowerby_assisted on the play. The Lumberkings quickly surged ahead with four unanswered goals in the same period. While Colquhoun- was, off for hooking, Dresden went farther ahead on a goal by Doug Easter, assisted by Rick Chinnick and Al Pray: A minute later, the winning goal for Dresden was netted by Chinnick. The assists went to Howard and Martin. A minute• after that, Martin got another one for Dresden with Wayne Cowell assisting. With two minutes left in the' second period, Goderich's Ken Meriam and Paul Kelly managed to sneak a third goal past Mills, leaving the.score 6- 3 for Dresden at the end of the second period. Each team took time out fro'rn a penalty -ridden third period to score one goal. Dresden'scame first at 13:55 from Doug De Line and Goderich ended the scoring at 18:35 with a goal by Ken Daer, assisted by Jim Farrish and Paul Rau. Throughout the third period, the crowd singled out Dresden',s Wayne Cowell as a target for abuse. When he was given a misconduct halfway through the period, several of the Goderich spectators made a lunge for ,him as he =made his way to- the dressing room. The Lumberkings now go on to play in the OHA Intermediate C finals. The Sailors fell behind by three games dropping a 9-1 decision to the Lumber Kings in Dresden last Wednesday. The Sailors were never close in the penalty -filled game score wise surrendering four goals in the opening period without a hint of retalliation.
