Farmers fight wet weather; Lobb says he '11 quit
May 3, 1979
The clock is runnings:lilt
on this year's growing
season, but so far, Huron
County farmers have
been held up by one of the
coldest and wettest
springs Mover a decade.
As of the first of May;
only about five per cent of
the spring grain crop is
in, mostly in the lighter
sandier soils, and none of
the ground has been
worked for the corn crop.
A . successful beef
barbecue was held at the
Hensall United CHurch

sittings, over 500 people
were served a sumptuous
meal of beef, vegetables,
salads and pie.
The money raised will\
go towards various
projects of the Hensall

About 16 area men and
women have
spearheaded a com-
mittee in Clinton which
hopes to get involved in
the provincially assisted
Business Improvement
Area (BIA) program.
The group, according to
organizer David Anstett,
was not formed to
criticize the town, but to
help it overcome apathy,
He noted that the tow.n
needs a major clean-up
project for businesses
and residences and there
are a, number of positive
points in Clinton that
could be expanded on.
"It's a very complex
-problem and will take a
lot of work. This will be
an uphill battle. • You
won't see all the results in
six months or a year. It
may take five years,"
Mr. Anstett explained.

Mayor Harold Lobb has
said that unless the
bylaws in town are en-
forced, he will resign as
Mayor of Clinton.
At a recent council
meeting, Mayor Lobb
stated: "As long as I'm
sitting in this chair, the
bylaws will -be enforced.
We've been a little lax in
the past and a lot of
people have gotten away
with things. But if the
bylaws don't. start to be
enforced, then I won't sit
in this chair" any longer."
Mayor Lqbb made the
statement since council
has recently come under
heavy criticism from the
The complaints began
after council decided to
enforce a bylaw asking
the Clinton Taxi to meet
specific .requirements
before the business'
operation licence would
be approved.
As part of the crack
down, Mayor Lobb went
on to say that people with
unclean properties will be
sent a registered letter
and if ' they don't look
after the problem, then
they will be fined.
Complications in
building a new swimming
pool for Clinton have
forced the town to make
several thousand dollars
worth of repairs to the old
pool and make it do until
this fall, when the town
hopes to begin con-
struction on a new one.
The town and the
recreation- committee
have called for tenders
since the old tender did
- not meet specifications.
The new pool was to have
cost $103,000, but costs,
the News -Record has
learned, have escalated
into the $175,000 range
and the town will have to
decide if it can handle the
extra debt load.
