At this column goes to
press ,the residents of
Bayfield and many others
in this vicinity are
especially saddened by
. the loss of Mrs. Vina
Parker - a respected
citizen and friend. A
former schoolteacher in
the village, she was both
reliable and energetic in
any endeavour which she
undertook.
The News -Record was
particularly indebted to
Vina for the research she
accomplished for the
Bayfield Centennial
edition working along
with Mrs. Ethel Poth and
Mrs. Milvena Erickson
and others. It was always
refreshing to have Vina
and Ethel spend a .day
here at the office delving
through our old files.
To tilt Parker and the
family, the News -Record
joins many others in
sympathy.

Do you think you've
heard every elephant
joke there is? Maybe you
haven't heard these!
Why did the elephant
wear one red shoe, one
yellow shoe, one orange
shoe and one green shoe?
How can you tell if there's
an elephant in bed with
you? These are jokes that
Philamina, the ant, tells
to Sloan, the anteater, in
Patti Stren's new book
"Sloan and Philamina, or
How To Make Friends
With Your Lunch" which
will be one of the books
featured. this Saturday at
the Clinton Library's
"Authors Party.",
Since November 17-24
is the Children's Book
Festival, staff at the

be an interesting way in
which to introduce
several Canadian
children's authors and
their works. Featured
authors Patti Stren, Ann
Blades; and Dennis Lee
will all have Several of
their works presented in'
crazy and imaginative
ways. This zany event is

into the Boy Scout of Canada movement. After
the Beavers repeated the promise, each parent
proudly presented their own son with a scarf
while Tic Tac the Colony section leader secured
it with the Beaver waggle.
It was a night for special ceremonies and the
Beavers also received their tail to be worn on the
back of the hat signifying growth and develop-
ment in the colony.
Games involving the boys as well as parents
preceded a lunch served by Brownies, Tracy St,
Louis and Lynn, Feeney and Girl Guides, Joy
Cudmore, Roxanna Edwards, Tracy Potter arid
Laurie Colquhoun.
The Beavers wish to thank the Guides and
Brownies and also Evelyn Feeney for donating
their time to the colony.
CUBS: District Commissioner Walter
Thompson visited the Cub Pack ,and handed out
Boy Scout calendars for the boys to sell. All
proceeds will go towards the Boy Scouts of
Canada.
The Cubs are presently working to meet the
requirements of their star work. Self develop-
ment, physical skills and learning about the
natural world are just a few requirements for
these important badges.
SCOUTS: The Scbuts continued on their second
week of the gun handling and safety course. Don
Jefferson displayed several rifles, explained the
different types of §ights! and the four shooting
positions, and target scoring.
The boys are looking forward to the completion
of the course next week and the subsequent
campout when they will be able to put their
training to use on the target range. •
