Few things are worse
than having your car quit
. on you. Whether it's on a
busy street, country road or
. in your driveway the results
are generally the same -- a
feeling of helplessness.
But you can help avoid
many such situations by
taking simple precautions
and making regular under -
the -hood inspections. It's
cheap insurance and you
don't have to be a mech-
anical whiz.
If the Bible is the world's
best -read book then the
average car -owner's man-
ual must be the least -read.
Stuffed in the glove
.compartment it languishes
there for years, untouched.
Yet it contains a goldmine
of information on how to
keep your car purring like a
kitten.
Crack it open for profit-
able reading.
When you do, you'll
discover that a properly -
maintained vehicle not only
prevents most annoying
and frustrating failures, but
pays off in reduced fuel
- costs.
For example, a well -
tuned engine will signific-
antly improve mileage. A
clogged air -filter can cause
as severe problems as a
poorly:tuned engine, You•
can lose more than a mile
per gallon with under-
inflated tires and a mal-
functioning choke can rob
you of up to 30 per cent fuel
efficiency.
If you're paying nearly a
dollar a gallon for gas, and
driving 20,000 miles a year
this can add up to hundreds
of wasted dollars. Enough,
in some cases, to finance a
winter holiday in the sun.
One thing you should do
is find out where your car's
fusebox is (generally
located under the dash).
Knowing its location and
function could save you -
embarrassment.
Say your car horn sticks
(perish the thought), you
won't have to rip out wires
or get into a panic. You'll
simply remove the fuse.
And if the wipers. refuse to
work, you'll know to check
the fuse first, then move on
to check the wiper motor or'
hoses.
And what if the power
steering goes stiff? Lift the
hood to check if the drive
belt has. broken. Failing
that, check the fluid level in
the power steering res-
ervoir.
Should the engine refuse
to turn over, lots of things
could be wrong. But

battery posts and the
battery cables is a common
"no -start" reason. Or the
ground wire connected to
the car block may be loose
or broken. Check it out.
You could be out ofgas, of
course, or the battery may
be dead -- in which case you.
need help.
"Flats" can happen to
anyone. So it's a good idea
to periodically check the
pressure in the spare tire.
Also, keep a 12 -inch square
piece of thick plywood in
the trunk to provide a
solid base for the jack.
Good driving habits help
a lot.
Avoid jack -rabbit starts.
They burn up gas and wear
out tires. Driving at
sensible speeds and avoid-
ing sudden stops and starts
helps conserve gas too.
Dirty points and plugs
put excessive strain on the
battery. Hoses, radiator
pressure cap and anti-
freeze level (oil too) must
be checked frequently.
Check the levels on the
master cyclinder and
power steering reservoir,
too.
