Clinton News-Record, 1979-10-25, Page 29Insulation saves you money
One of the best energy
axing investments a
ome"bwner can make is
properly selected and
installed home insulation,
say home economists,
Home Economics`
Branch, Ontario Ministry,
of Agriculture and Food.
The effectiveness of an.
insulating material is.
measured by its
resistance to heat passing
through it. This is called
the resistance -value or R-
value of insulation. The
higher the R -value, the
more effective the in-
sulation.
Insulating material
should be purchased
according to the R -value,
not just the thickness.
One inch of glass fibre
IPThe.cracks in an average
house equal a hole half the size
of a card table! 'You can lose a
ldt'of heat through a hole that
size!
Many things createcracks
around doors, windows and
other openings: wood shrinks,
putty cracks, foundations settle,
seals wear, doors warp.
The end result is usually a lit-
tle crack here, a crack there.
Federal government figures.,
say that as much as 55% of the
normal heating Toad on your
house comes from 'air infiltra-
tion.'
That's heat lost through open
doors and other teaks. Some.
15 . to 30% Of the Load is heat
lost through cracks around
dosed doors .and windows.
And, of course, it works both
ways: wasted heat in winter is
the same as lost cooling in sum-
mer when you have air condi-
tioning.
The most cost-effective way
to cut loss of heating and cool-
ing energy around doors and
Windows is to caulk and install
professional weatherseals.

insulation has the same
R -value as 40 inches of
concrete. R -values are
clearly stated on in-
sulation wrappers and
containers.
There are many in-
sulation materials on the
market. " Flexible in-
sulation made from glass
fibre or mineral wool is
the most _common. It
comes in four -foot long
batts pr in blankets cut to
length by the installer.
Both are fire and
moisture resistant and
easy to install. The R -
value for flexible in-
sulation is 2.9 to 4.0 per
inch, according to the
type used.
Loose -fill insulation is
available in glass fibre,
mineral wool, cellulose
fibre and vermiculite.
This insulation is sold by
the bag or bale, can be
poured into unfinished
attics, or blown into the
attic space or wall cavity.
• Depending on the in-
sulation type and method
used R -values vary
between 2.1 and 3.6 per
inch.
Rigid -board insulation
is used in the insulation of
basement walls and in
new construction. R -
values range between 3.4
and 6.0 per inch, but great
care must be taken in
installation or the in-
sulation, may be a fire
haza.r`d. Rigid -board and
foamed insulations must
Door and window seals are vital
energy savers
Homeowners, for the first
time, can obtain Professional
weatherscals from the nation's
largest producer. Schlegel
Corp. of Rochester, N.Y.
Schlegel :has two weather -
seals to do the .job: 'Polyflex'
door seals and Hinged Window
Sealing Kits. Each comes with
self-adhesive backing for easy
mounting.
Weatherseal for doors
Polyflex brand is a plastic.
strip that fits between ,door and
jamb. Old metal weatherstrip-
ping need not be removed.
When the door is closed. it
presses against the strip, creat-
ing a tight seal that is invisible
when the door is closed.
Polyflex weatherseal wilt last
for many years without shrink-
ing, cracking, fading or rotting,
Hinged Window Kit
Hinged Window Sealing Kits
contain•I8 feet of extruded soft
:rubber sealing bead, also with
self-adhesive mounting.
This rubber bead is designed
•to fit around hinged windows,
such as French windows e.r
casement windows. Cellar win-
dows are often hinged, as are
balcony windows.
Installation takes only min-
utes, and the only tool needed is
a pair of scissors. The seal can
be applied either to the window
Or the frame.
Simply cut to size, peel hack
the protective paper from the
adhesive andpress the strip into
place.

HINGED, or casement, win-

homes. Because of their' con-
struction, they require spe-

Foamed insulation is
the new insulating
material. This method
applies foam inside the
finished wall and attic
cavities. Special
equipment and highly
skilled contractors are
needed for this process.
R -values for foamed
insulation vary between
2.5 and 2.8 per inch.
Recommended ,..R -
values for each area of
the house are the
following: for ceilings, R-
28; for walls, R-12 . (ex-
cept for solid ,masonry),
R-8 if less'than 50 'percent
'of ` basement walls are
above ground, R-12 for
more than 50 percent.
Cathedral ceilings, built
over unheated garages or
unheated crawl spaces,
should be insulated to R-
20.
