Warm, sunny, summer weather on Monday lured
many area residents outside to catch up on their fall
chores, like Mrs. Mary Trick of Rattenbury Street,
who planted crocus bulbs. (News -Record photo)
Ball diamond in 1980
The regular monthly
meeting of the Goderich
township recreation
council met Wednesday,
October 17 at
Holmesville.
From the business
arising from the minutes
it was reported that a two
or three evening forum on
estate planning would be
set up some time in
November.
The park committee
reported that there is an
immediate need for about
four more inches of top
soil on the athletic field.
If there is anyone who
could donate some from
where it would be still
accessible ,(Wet ground)
the committee would -
stock pile it until better
weather conditions for
spreading. Phone Gerry
Ginn 524-4163.
.They also said that
before the end of the year
they expected the steel
fence posts would be
imbedded .in cement, the
back stop completed by
Gerry Blake, and stone
chips spread on the in-
field. The wire fencing
will go up in the spring.
The same area will be
ready for flooding for
winter skating.
Ben Whiteley, twp.
treasurer, presented an
itemized expense account
to date on the athletic
field. Although some
people .think very little
has been accomplished, it
was surprising to note
that $19,067.87 has been
spent on it . so far, plus
$5,208.50 was donated
labour, and $426 came in
special cash donations.
Donations that were not
valued were top soil,
dump truck and loader,
tractor and loader. These
were from Lavis Con-
struction, Holmesville
Valley Farms, Garth
Postill's 'Bulldozing,
Charles Bruinsma. The
estimated cost for the
completed project was
set at $28,000.
Gerry Ginn reported
that the project with
Haylow Electric on the
light towers had been
completed. Water lines
were installed in the
same trenches which
have now been covered.
The wiring for the pump
still remains to be done.
Marilyn Forbes and
Alice Porter agreed to
finalize plans with White
Carnation for the
Christmas dance
December 1`5,), and also
book future dances for
February 2 and March 1.
Twp. council reeve,
Grant Stirling announced
that at their last council
meeting itwas decided to
go ahead with a survey on
the land proposed for the
township hall (land
donated by 'the Huron Co.
School bd.).
Doug Yeo again in-
sisted that the twp.
council make a study of
similar joint council -
school bd. agreements to
formulatethe best
possible working
arrangement. He
suggested that the ar-
chitect knew of some
such situations.
Chairman Gerry Ginn
announced that the ar-
chitect Brian Garratt
wished to meet the
combined' council and
rec. council the following
night, Thursday, October
18, to discuss his further
plans on the drawings for
the township hall. (See
other story.)
Gerry also suggested
that in order to get as
much input for all age
groups into the plans and
desires for the building,
the rec council should
invite representatives of
- a senior citizens group
and a representative
from the Alpha Huron
group, for starters, to the
meeting with the ar-
chitect.
Pat Rivett, secretary of
the softball committee,
was present to read her
year-end report on twp.
softball. She stated that
they had 169 children
registered, including 50 in
the 5-10 yr. age group who
used the new T -ball
equipment. It proved to
be very successful with
many parents assisting.
The rec committee told
Pat that this year they
had suggested, and twp,
council agreed, that all
the softball and volleyball
coaches would be invited
to the township dinner on
December. 15, White
Carnation, as an ex-
pression of appreciation
from the township.
Also from the softball
executive, Art Bell, was
present to have some
bothersome questiont
answered which he had
recently voiced in a letter
to the editor of the Clinton
News -Record.
His concern for the lack
of grass seeding on the
new ball park was
acknowledged. His
concern for no diamond
available in the spring
(because of no grass
planting) was also an-
swered. The rec com-
mittee promised that the
next best step would be to
buy sod and probably use
the 1980 boys and girls
softball registrants .to
provide the manpower in
laying it, under super-
vision.
The rec . committee
assured Mr. Bell that
they too have been just as
exasperated with hold
ups and delays for the
last two years. But, when
a terrific financial
bequest for a township
hall arrives just as the
softball plans are un-
folding, it takes a great
deal of time to see that it
is all planned, positioned
and handled in the best
possible way.
Although Art still
wasn't entirely convinced
that there would be a ball
parI ready in time, Gerry
Giiir promised him that
the all diamond would
be ,ead? in the spring of
