School year starts

Public School is in full
operation for another
year. We are welcoming
three new.faces on staff,
Mrs. Marilyn Oestreicher
is teaching our Grade 1

Recipe
15 -Minute Chili
Sauce .
Peel and cut into pieces:
1-6 qt. baSket tomatoes
6 cups finely diced celery
4 cups diced onions
1 green pepper
1 red pepper
Combine and sprinkle
with 1/2 cup pickling salt.
Let stand overnight. Next
day, drain. Place
vegetables in a kettle and
add:
5 cups white sugar
2 cups vinegar
Combine:
1 oz. mustard seed
• tsp. cayenne pepper
Bring to a boil until
sugar dissolves. Boil with
'spice bag (1/2 cup pickling
spices) for 15 minutes.
Bottle. Makes 8 pints.
Ripe Cuc.imber
Pickle
2 qts. ripe (large yellow)
cucumbers, peeled and
chopped - no seeds
2 qts. onions, chopped
1 large cauliflower,
broken into bits
3 sweet red peppers,
chopped
1 hot red pepper, chopped
Sprinkle with salt.
Cover with water. Let
stand overnight. Drain in
morning.
Dressing
1/2 gal. white vinegar
9 cups white sugar
1.1/8 cups flour
1 tbsp. Keen's mustard
1 oz. celery seed
3 level tbsp. tumeric
1 tsp. curry powder

UCW meet
The Year of the Child
was the topic for
discussion when the
Tuckersmith I UCW
group met for their first
fall meeting on Sep-
tember 10.
Mrs. Hazel
McNaughton spoke on the
special year and the
group ..of 10 ladies at-
tending found the topic to
be interesting and in-
formative.
Mrs. McNaughton and
Mrs. Vina Berry were in
charge of the devotional
period, in which Mrs.
Berry gave a reading and
a hymn was sung with
Mrs. Ann Broadfoot at
the piano in the absence
of Mrs. Scott.
After the scripture
reading, given by Mrs.
Berry the offering, was
taken and dedicated by
Mrs. McNaughton. The
devotional portion of the
meeting was closed by
Mrs. "Berry with a prayer.
The business portion of
the meeting was chaired
by Mrs. Marjorie
Broadfoot , and in the
absense of Mrs. Doris
Siliery, Mrs. Stoll gave
the secretary and .
treasurer's report.
Thank -you cards were
received from Mrs.
Beatrice Stoll •and Mrs.
Broadfoot. It was noted
that the beef barbecue
will be held on October 17.
The UCW fall rally will be
held in. Varna on .October
16, beginning at 6:30 pm
and the Sunshine Group
will hold their bazaar on
December 1,.

program. We are all
looking forward to a good
year.
Our swimming
program will start at the
end of this, month. Again,
this year, we are hoping
to involve all of our full
time pupils in this very
worthwhile prOgram. We
are also hoping to have a
Hamburger Day early in
October. Last year this
activity was a great
success.
Our boys and girls have
been actively utilizing the
new playground equip-
ment in the park. A
sincere "thank you" goes

Method: mix spices in

What's up
Cubs have started in
Vanastra again this year.
They .hold their meetings
Monday nights at the
Vanastra Recreation
Centre from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Cubs are open to all boys
who are seven years old
now up to age 10. Come
out and join in the fun.
Any boys who wish to
register for Scouts who
are ages 11-15 can still do
so at 1 Quebec St.,
Vanastra, or phone 482-
7723.
The Vanastra and
District Lions Club will
hold their annual Fall
Fling this Saturday,
September 22 and music
will be supplied by the
Star Trex.

Last week's share -the -
wealth winners were:
Berthena Hammond of
Bayfield and Freida
Smith of RR5 Clinton,
$32.50 each on a split;
Heather Plumsteel,
Vanastra, $69. Mrs.
Kathryn Cutt, of
.Goderich, Leonard Steep
of RR5 Clinton, and -
Evelyn Frances of
Bayfield won $24 each on
a split. The three jackpot
winners received $67
each. They were Heather
Plumsteel, Vanastra;
Janet Parent Bayfield
and an anonymous
winner.
This is the executive of the new Vanastra and
district Lioness club that was formed last Friday
night at a special night at the Vanastra Recreation
Centre. The club is already very active in the
community, following hard on the heels of the

Summerhill Ladies impressed Dutch visitor
Twenty , members and
two visitors attended the
September 12 meeting of
the Summerhill Ladies
Club held at, the home of
Olive Neal in Clinton.
Sandra Westerhaut
opened the meeting with
a poem entitled "After
the Summer Holidays".
The creed and Lord's
prayer were repeated in
unison and the roll call
was answered by each
member relating some
incident from her public,
school days.
Phyllis Tyndall read
the minutes and Lorna
Ellis gave the treasurer's
report. Penny Sale
tickets were distributed
and it was decided to
purchase an article for
the penny sale.
A thank -you note was
received from Cheryl and
Murray Brown,
Edmonton, for the
wedding gift from the
club. An invitation' was
extended to all members
of the community to
attend the 40th wedding
anniversary reception to
be held at the White
Carnation on October 12
for Donna and Harold
Tyndall.
An auction of baked
goods and other articles
will be held at the next
meeting and the roll call
will be answered by each
member bringing some
article for - a household
shower.
The next meeting will
be at Sandra.
Westerhaut's home at
2:30 p.m. on October 10.
The lunch. and program
committee will be 1'Zuth
Jenkins, •Margaret Good
and Olive Neal.
Barbara Lovett won the
raffle, and Donna, Vera
and Verna - Gibbings
conducted a bingo game,
which provided much fun
and excitement. Those
lucky people winning
prizes were: Ruth
Jenkins, Barbara Lovett,
Donna Tyndall, Any
Gerrits, Edith W., Ida
Wright, Mary Van Den,
Elzen,. and Iabel
Stewart.
The club ladies were
honored to have as their
guest, Tuus Van Der Pas,
from Holland, a sister of
John Van Den Elzen.
Mrs. Van Der Pas con-
sidered the evening spent
with the club ladies one of
the highlights of her visit.
She was very much
impressed by the
friendliness of the ladies
and the all round good
feeling generated among
the group. Let us hope
that this little bit of
sunshine may spread to
• other parts of the world
that are not so fortunate.
