A milestone in
Auburrr's history was
marked in October, 1960
with the official sod
turning of the Community
Memorial Hall.
The Community Hall
Association was formed
in 1947 with the object to
provide Auburn with a
Community Memorial
Hall in honor of those who
lost their lives in the two
World Wars, and to
commemorate the early
pioneers. ° ..
Proceeds from field
days, social events,
dances, concerts, and
donations were collected
over the next ten years.
In 1957 the Women's
Institute requested the
re -organization of the
association.
A meeting was held in
1958 to choose a site for
the new hall, arld in 1959 a
corner lot was acquired
on Mill Road from the
Athletic Association.
Construction of the 40 x
80 laminated arch
building, with polished
concrete floors and an
outer covering of heavy
aluminum began in the
fall of 1960. The outside
was completed by
Christmas.
W.J. Craig, carpenter
for the interior, installed
the furnace and con-
nected the hydro in the
spring of 1961. The next
fall, the well was drilled
and the pressure system
was installed. The
Women's Institute
stocked the kitchen.
In October 1962, the hall
was officially opened.
The program included
speeches from officials,
with W.L. Craig
presiding, a dedication
conducted by Rev. Chas.
Lewis of the United
Church, and Mrs. Chas.
Straughan and Mr. and
Mrs. John Houston un-
veiled a plaque presented
by the Women's Institute.
Total cost of the hall in
1962 was estimated at
$22,000. The Village of
Auburn and area raised
about $15,000 of the cost.
