There's so much to be said in favour of the package which keeps the cereals crisper, the sliced meats fresher and the potatoes huddled neatly into a bag instead of sprawling all over. However, without a sharp pair of kitchen shears you might as well give up. There are certain sealed packages which you think a good tug will open. Well, tug on, and on and on! Packaged wieners float appetizingly in juice until the package is cut - then they swim around on the kitchen counter in the same juice unless you're a quick and tidy package opener. Following a customary tradition, the Clinton Canadian Legion, presented sixteen new Guides with silver compasses. Tuesday night prizes went to ladies' high, Audrey Walsh, men's high, Elmer Murray. Thursday evening - ladies' to Norma Ashton and men's to Cliff Ashton. + ++ The University of Toronto library has received a generous memorial donation of recordings from the family of the late David Denny, son of Betty Gauthier of Egmondville and grandson of Vera Bennett of Clinton. One thousand LP's from his collection plus ,hundreds of 78 RPM discs of historic interest. Among the LP's was a large number of private limited editions, records of complete operas and recitals and some operas never commercially recorded. Some were releases of the Toscanini Society, NBC and New York Philharmonic Symphony broadcasts and some recorded rehearsals. Mr.. (Expositor photo) Fitzgerald wins award A writer with the Clinton News -Record has won a third place prize in a national writing contest for daily or weekly newspapers with 30,000 circulation or less. James Fitzgerald, editor of the News - Record Won the award, and will receive a scroll and $100 for a story that appeared, in the weekly newspaper last October on Bob Norman's far- ming operation near Varna. Mr. Fitzgerald was one of nine Canadian jour- nalist, and writers for consumerr magazines who shared in cash prizes totalling $2,550, awarded by the Canadian Grocery Distributors' Institute (C.GD.I )...in conj.unction_ :. with Canadian Grocer, a newsmagazine for the food trade. The annual com- petition, held for the first time in 1978, is intended to be the food industry's way of honoring those Canadian journalists who have demomstrated a high degree of professionalism in their field by researching and writing accurately on any aspect of the Canadian food industry. In the 30,000 or less circulation category, Mrs. Bev Christensen of the Prince George, B.C. Citizen took the $500 first prize, Jean Garon of the Plein -jour sur Manicouagan, Baie- Comeau was the winner of the $250 second prize, while Mr. Fitzgerald was -third. There were also two other classes, one for dailie-and weeklies over 30,000 circulation, and a class for all consumer magazines.; •regardless:,,af —.. frequency of circulation. The group attended Holy Mass at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Father Hardy as celebrant in St. Joseph's Church, Clinton. Father Hardy also gave a short homily. Following the church service the members, headed by a Piper and Drum Corp and 16 Fourth Degree Knights as an honor guard, marched to the Cenotaph where the Knights placed a wreath in remembrance of the war dead. Following the laying of the wreath, the parade marched to the Clinton Legion Hall where the Legion Ladies Auxiliary catered for the breakfast. Following grace by the Rev. Fr. Hardy, Council Chaplain, Ewart Wilson, Catholic Activity Chairman, and Master of Ceremonies, introduced Smile the head table: Rene Brochu, Program Chairman and Mrs. Brochu; Edward Melady, Deputy, Grand Knight, and Mrs. Melady; Andrew Kelly, Grand Knight of Kilroy Council, Stratford and Mrs. Kelly,, Seamus Doherty, Grand Knight and Mrs: Doherty; Hon. Eugene Whelan, former Agricultural Minister, and Mrs. Whelan; Rev. Fr. Hardy, Chaplain; Phil Durand, immediate Past Grande Knight and Mrs. Durand; Sir Knight Vic Walden, Faithful Navigator of the Dean Egan Assembly of the 4th Degree Knights and Mrs. Walden; Ewart Wilson, Catholic Activity Chairman and Mrs. Wilson. During the program, Sir Knight Andy Kelly proposed the toast to Canada followed by greetings to the members and guests by Seamus Doherty, Grand Knight.
