Exeter Saddle Club plans- show
On Saturday, June 9,
the Exeter Saddle Club
will host the 12th annual
Mid -Western Quarter
Horse Show at its new
Huron Park (Centralia)
facility. The latter was
constructed in 1977 with
Wintario assistance.
Although not in-
corporated officially as a
non-profit organization
until June 1977, the
Exeter Saddle Club was
founded in 1957. For the
past 22' years, its primary
objective has been to
encourage fellowship,
sportsmanship and
rnaturall y
sfeaking
horsemanship amongst
its members - par-
ticularly amongst the
youth, most of whom are
area 4-H Horse Club
members - by promoting
knowledge in the care,
handling and enjoyment
of horses as well as in the
science of equitation and
showmanship.
Over the years the Mid -
Western Quarter Horse
Show has proven to be the
largest annual breed
show in Western Ontario.
It has consistently
received a Class A rating
from the American
The last Saturday in June traditionally signal's
the Opening of the bass season in Southwestern
Ontario, but it's a good idem to start getting
ready for it now. Those bass plugs should be
gone over now and the hooks touched up -with a
fine stone or 'jeweller's file and line should be
replaced on fishing reels. Anticipation is half the
,fun'when it comes to fishing, and tinkering with
your equipment before the season opens brings
that "anticipation" to its highest level.
The daily lifnit for smallmouth and
largemouth bass is six in one day. This means
either six largemouth or six smallmouth, or any
combination thereof, and this figure also
represents the possession limit for these fish.
At first glance, the difference between
smallmouth and largemouth bass seems almost
• impossible to determine. It is actually quite
easy. Close the mouth on the fish and look at it
with a side view. If the back of the mouth (the
technical term is upper maxillary hinge) ex-
tends past a vertical line drawn through the
middle of the eye, it's a largemouth, and if not
it's a smallmouth. The largemouth also has a
, separation between the spiny part of the dorsal
fin and the' soft part. The smallmouth also
displays a row of dark vertical bars along its
side.
One of the reasons that I believe bass fishing is
so popular is because they will respond to
anyone's fishing style. The bait fisherman can
catch them with worms and minnows, and really
clean up with helgramites and crayfish. If you
are a novice fisherman, however, I would
suggest you avoid using crayfish initially. They
have a habit of crawling under a rock where they
are cafe, and trying to keep the little critters out
wl they can do some good is often very
frustrating for the beginner.
The lure fisherman can collect his share of
Kass using spoons or spinners. While most of
these flashers will produce bass sometimes, the
Mepp's spinners have proven to be the most
consistent for me. The Mepp's Bass Killer Kit
offers a good selection of colours (bass have been
proven to have colour perception) and are a good
size for the hulk of your fishing requirements.
The assortment of plugs that is available for
bass is almost astounding. They all work, but my
favourites are the Rapala, ,Deep Dive River
Runt, Hawaiian Wriggler, Jitterbug, Hula
Popper and Crazy Crawler. Of these, the surface
lures are probably the most dramatic, and fun to
use, They are all designed to set up a commotion
on top of the water, and being able to watch what
your lure is doing makes fishing just that much
more interesting. There are few things that I find
as relaxing as listening to a jitterbug gurgle and
pop its way back to the boat on a still lake at
dusk. And when a big fish hits a surface lure in a
volcano of water - WOW! ! ! It usually takes about
half an hour for my heart to settle down after
that happens.
One of the things that I really enjoy about bass
fishing is that they are easy to release without
harm to fight another day. If the fish is grasped
by the lower jaw, it hangs immobile while you
work the hooks out. This minimizes any damage
that might be done to the fish through improper
handling. A fish that, has been properly released
has provided you with a great deal of excitement
and enjoyment; has the potential of doing the
same for someone else; and is still in its natural
habitat able to spawn and propagate its own
species.
-One last word about bass fishing. If all your
normal fishing techniques fail and you aren't
catching anything, don't be afraid to try even the
most ridiculous technique you can think of. When
bass fishing, it's often the unorthodox technique
that brings home the bacon, and you may be the
one to have the last laugh.

not allowed to play
together. Foursomes or
less are allowed to speed
up the rate of play. A
fivesome will hold up
play and result in pile ups
at the tees. On busy days
a foursome is ideal,
especially if we can send
out consistant groups of 4.
A twosome or a single
will only jam the course
up more since their rate
of play will be too fast and
the smaller group will
over -run the other
foursomes.
Many courses' have
starters to help this
problem at the first tee. A
ball rack also helps since
when golfers arrive at the
tee they place a ball in the
rack\ and when the ball
reaches the bottom, it is
their turn to tee off. If
ingles or doubles are
playing it's a good idea to
form a foursome with
others at the tee, in order
to speed things up on a
busy day.
Once you're out on the
course remember not td
rush the people in front of
you but be ready to hit
when the time is right. If
each person is ready to
hit when they are sup-
posed to, things will move
along smoothly. There's
nothing worse than
waiting for someone who
doesn't have his club
ready or isn't even in the
vicinity of his golf ball.
If you are learning, or
have lost a ball or, in any
way delaying those
following, 'signal the
group . behind to play
through, Step aside and
allow these people
through. Give them
ample time to get ahead
of you before continuing
to play.
Many players take
pieces of turf or divots
when hitting the ball.
This is not a fault or a
problem as long as .the
divots are replaced when
possible If. __they._ .ar,e.
replaced and stamped
down the grass . will
resume growing and the
course's condition, won't
be altered.
-r When arriving at the
green and preparing to
putt players should
respect the rights of those
in their group by not
stepping in the line of the
other's putts. Remove the
pin before putting but
remember to replace the
pin (flag) before
proceeding to the next
tee. On a course such as
ours, where there is only
a short distance to the
next tee, remember that
others are preparing to
tee off nearby and ex-
cessive noise is a major
distraction to other
players. Once you have
putted out do not replay
the putts. Othef's are
waiting to follow and you
will have ample putting
practice on the practise
green.
There are many rules
bf golf and the etiquette
involved_. Only after
playing `for awhile and
observing the game, can
you expect to know them.
However if everyone
remembers to conduct
themselves the way they
would like to see others
conduct themselves, a
crowded day can be just
as relaxing and enjoyable
as any other day.
The draw for the match
play tournaments have
been made. If anyone is
still unsigned and would
like to play, please sign
up in the clubhouse and
we will include you in the
fun. Rules are being
posted with the players
games in the clubhouse.
Tues., May 22 was the
'first day and the first
round matches must be
completed June 4. Don't
forget that tonight
(Thurs.) is men's night, a
great time to get those
matches rolling.
Junior golf week is fast
approaching and we'll
have more on that next
week. This Saturday
afternoon a small tour-
nament from Bendix will
be held at the course so
everyone may want to
beat the rush by arriving
early on Saturday.
