Make Game Room
Nothing meets the chal-
lenge of dancing feet, party
snacks or bouncing
eightballs like a hardwood
floor. Easy to maintain and
naturally good-looking, to-
day's durable parquet and
plank k an unbea .able
partner for any game room.
If at-home entertainment
is your family's idea of fun
but you shudder at the
thought of what pizza can
do to your living room' car-
pet, why not convert an
underused garage or . extra
bedroom to a game room all
can enjoy, complete with
pool table, foosball or pin-
ball machines.
For example, -- if energy
consciousness has. inspired
you to become a one -car
family with a two -car gar-
age, you have more than
enough room to play.
Start by replacing the gar-
'ag'e door on the game room
side with sliding glass patio
doors or floor -to -ceiling
windows. Separate the,
single car parking space
from the play area with
easy -to -construct, built-in
shelving, then finish existing
walls for sound and weather-
proofing.
By installing gluedown
hardwood flooring that ap-
_, -plies directly to concrete and
most other floor surfaces,
you're well on your way to
Adding a R,,nom?
On the inside, as' well as
the exterior, it is important
to a4oid the feeling that
your room addition is an
after -thought. Decorative
materials for walls, floor
and ceiling in the room
should be consistent with
those of the original house.
Color is especially impor-
tant. The safest thing is sim-
ply to continue the basic
color scheme of.. adjoining
rooms, unless the function
of the new room is totally
different. In this case, you
may choose to accentuate
the difference by doing it in
colors that provide a pleas-
ing, compatible contrast. If
*5`. your room addition is to be
a family room, you can add
to the pleasure of it by
decorating 'and furnishing in
a friendly, informal at-
mosphere. Handsome, pre -
finished plywood paneling is
ideal for the walls. The floor
could have colorful, comfor-
table scatter rugs.
Because some of the ac-
tivities in a successful family
room may tend to be noisy,
you will probably want
acoustic tile for the ceiling.

For the warmth and
wearability an active game
room needs, choose rustic
flooring such as Cum-
berland II by Bruce Hard-
wood Floors, an easy -care
parquet that glues down in
one step. You can stretch
decorating dollars by -install-
ing it yourself.
With your new floor
underfoot, you're ready to
unleash your decorating in-
genuity on a room that's
both functional and fun.

set, turntable, records, box-
ed games, cards, pool cues
and other accessories.
Solve additional storage
problems by hanging bicy-
cles, tennis rackets, skis or
snowshoes on an easy -to -
get -to wall. Complete the
three-dimensional wall
mural•with a colorful card
table and folding chairs.
At one end of the room,
try hanging a dartboard on
a cork -co've'red `backdrop,
along with a giant black-
board for keeping score or
playing tick-tack-toe.
If your garage has a loft,

re -shape it into a cushiony
conversation -pit, accessible
via an iron library staircase
(estate sales are a likely
source) or a sturdy built-in
ladder.
Team floppy throw -
pillows and low -profile
stack tables with inlaid
chess, checker and back-
gammon boards. When not
in use, they'll serve as snack
tables, or stack up in a
corner.
A '40s jukebox with LPs
of the same era would be a
novel addition for back-
ground music or when pool
and ping-pong tables are
pulled aside for dancing.
Whatever the activity,
with rugged oak parquet or
plank underfoot, you can
count on flooring that won't
lose out to wear and tear.
