Hydro
workers
accept raise
Ignoring their union's
advice, 15,000 Ontario
Hydro workers including
45 members of the Clinton
local, represented by the
Canadian Union of Public
Employees last week
voted 61.8 percent in favor
of accepting a wage
settlement of between six
and eight percent.
It was the first time in
the approximate 30 -year
history of CUPE Local
1,000 that the rank and file
failed to follow the
executive's recom-
mendation.
Mark Breckon, division
chairman of the 2,700
members working at the
Bruce Nuclear Power
Development, said that
while he was not sur-
prised by the vote, he was
"very disappointed."
"There is no question
we have an internal rift in
the union and it may end
in a split in the union," he
said. "There is no
question it's not a good,
contract. It's not a good
offer."
Breckon said the six -to
eight -percent wage in-
crease won't cover the
rise in the cost of living, ...
expected to reach 9.2
percent this year.
However, he said the
main issues the executive
wanted to push for were
better vacation and
pension plans, a cost -of -
living clause and a
shorter work week.
Breckon said the
benefits package sought
-by - the -union ---executive
would only cost Hydro
about 1.5 percent more.
"The whale vacation
package would only cost
0.9 of one percent."
He said the executive
also wanted a multi-year
contract, not the.one-year
agreement tile workers
approved. It is
retroactive to April 1.
Breckon said the
movement to accept _
Hydro's offer came
mainly from people
earning a weekly salary.
"A large part of them
are women earning a
second family in-
come...and they are not
really concerned about
pension plans and
things."
He said that of the 2,700
CUPE members at the
Bruce development,
those who, are the
primary income earners
and working shift work
voted 65 percent against
Hydro's offer.
Breckon said had the
full , membership given
the union a strike man-
date, it wouldn't have
meant a full walkout.
"Our m-embership
wouldn't allow it (a
strike), it's as simple as
that. Too mangy have long
memories back to 1972
when we were out for four
months."
He said the executive
wanted a work -to -rule
campaign with a with-
drawal of overtime.
He predicted that
Hydro would have given
in to the union demands
long before consumers
began to suffer.
Under the former
agreement that expired
March 31, linemen's pay
scales were $5.93 to $10.37
an hour; motor
mechanics $5.82 to $9.55;
nuclear operators $6.47 to
T12.42; electrical in-
spectors $418.25 to $479.02
a week.
Clinton Lions
get members
On April 24 the Lions
Club of Clinton initiated
three new members,
Doug Coventry, Joe Daer
and Neil Elliott. All three
were sponsored by Lion
member Rene Brochu.
The new members will
be helping the rest of the
club sell tickets on a
camper can. Each ticket
is $5 and all proceeds will
be used for community
betterment.
"When you're ap-
proached to purchase a
ticket, think twice, " Lion
Charles Fee said. "Enjoy
the comfort of knowing
you have contributed to
this special fund raising
caihpaign."
The draw for the van
will be made on Friday,
July 20, in ti a for
camping.
