Clinton News-Record, 1979-01-18, Page 15Poor;vislhillty.and drifting snow caused a three car - crash on Highway 4, south of Clinton on Sunday. Total damage in the crash was $4,600 and only one passenger received injuries. Two of the cars were taken to Goldsworthy's Garage and the third to Carter's. (News -Record photo) Middleton ACW hear about trip by Blanche Deeves ° The monthly meeting of the ACW was held on Thursday, January llth at the home of Lois Wise. Audrey Middleton leader for the meeting, opened it with a reading and welcomed everyone and thanked Lois for opening her home. Audrey read from the living message "Mankind Owes to the Child the Best That It Has To Give." This being 1979, "The International Year Of The Child" various ar- ticles from newspapers on the child and child abuse and what we as individuals can do were read. Sarah Storey read the invocation and the scripture and a hymn was sung while Lois Wise played the organ. Sarah Storey read the Meditation and led in prayer. The secretary's report was given by Estelle Wise in the absence of Shirley Storey. Vera presented the treasurer's report and the annual report, and read a letter from Zehrs thanking the members for = par ticipating in --saving their tapes. Audrey Middleton read a letter from Family Services and the supply report was given by Delores Dutot. The social • service report was given by _Blanche Deeves and Lois Smith read a Christmas card note from the foster child Ste. Jean Laurent of Haiti, wishing the members a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Sarah Storey read from the Huron Church News and ladies are to hand in their pennies in at the next meeting. Guest for the evening was Kelvin Jervis, who showed slides of his trip to Puerto Rico,, which was very interesting. Before starting his slides, which were taken two years ago, he gave the members a few views and reminders of our storm that yeir, quite a com- parison to what he went to, sun, white sand, beautiful mountains and scenery, and to see how the people live, both the rich and the poor, but .Kelvin says all were very happy people. Sarah Storey thanked Kelvin for showing his slides ' and sharing this trip. The meeting closed and ..lunch was served by the hostess and assisted by Lois Smith. Personals We are sorry to hear that Debbie Smith. is in Clinton Hospital and by paper time, hopes to be home. Get well wishes go to Debbie. Church at St. James Middleton was cancelled due to the weather. Mrs. Fred Middleton has returned home after spending two weeks over the holiday season with her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Bill Counter. Paul Middleton, Don Wise, and Gerald Riley returned from a week's vacation in Florida during the Christmas week. The weather proved disappointing since it 'lead rained everyday, but they had a good time. Vestry meeting The annual vestry meeting of St. James Church, Middleton was held Monday evening January 15 in the home of Mr. and IMrs. Ray Wise, with Rev. Wm. Bennett opening lthe meeting with prayers. Estelle Wise read the various thank -you notes to members for their work in the past year, and also the minutes of the last meeting. The Rector said we stand together at 'a New Year." This is another opportunity to serve Qur Lord. through our Parish. Let us look back (not like Lots wife to be turned into pillars of salt!) but to see how well we served Him in year 1978AD. Then together let us take up thechallenge of the year ahead. I wish to express my thanks to all those who gave us their time and talent to do the work of the church. Thank you for being supportive, un- derstanding ,and critical ,whenever needed." Dean and Phyllis Aldwinkle, Edward and Blanche Deeves were asked to mark all the church articles and list articles to be recorded by the Rector. Several thank -you notes were brought forth, James Storey for snow removal, Don Middleton for lighting the furnace and those who kept the lawn cut. Don Middleton voted the meeting be ad- journed and .seconded by Bill Steenstra. A boun- tiful lunch was served by the hostess and was assisted by Phyllis Aldwinkle and Blanche Deeves. Have Fire Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ritchie who live at the corner of the 6th and Telephone 'Road, were very lucky on Saturday when their chimney caught fire and the only damage was to their wallpaper. We of the community are also pleased to hear this was a small fire on such a stormy evening Satur- day. In January, single pensioners . who receive the federal Old Age Security pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) will receive an additional $20 and married couples, if each spouse qualifies for GIS, will each receive $10 in their federal cheques. Infresponsei to these in- creases in the federal payments, Ontario has raised the monthly GAINS income levels to $343 ($4,120 annually) for single recipients and $666 ($8,000 annually) for qualified married couples. •. Please note that this is the first time that the married rate cannot be calculated as double the guarantee for a single pensioner. This is a result of the difference in the increases by GIS by the federal government. The following calculations indicate the maximum GAINS, payments to single and qualified married pen- sioners : Old Age Security, single, $167.21 - married, $167.2.1 ; Guaranteed Income, Supplement, single, $137.28 - married $114.15; Ontario GAINS,. $38.88 - married $52.01, making totals of - single, $343.37 and married $333.37. Pensioners who do not qualify for the federal Old Age Security pension because of the residency requirements, but do qualify for GAINS payments, will receive the full amount of the $10 and $20 increase directly. Payments for single pensioners will increase to $343.37 and to $333.37 for qualified married couples. CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 11878 --PAGE 15 salary for area inspector Hensall's council agreed last week to put building inspector Herman Van Wieren on a salary of $1320 per year effective January 1. Herman Van Wieren said at present his agreement with the village limits him to four inspections which, Van Wieren said was inadequate for certain buildings. Van Wieren had pioposed to the municipalities which he serves as building in- spector, Hensall, Stanley, Tuckersmith, Bayfield, Usborne and Seaforth that he be put on salary with the municipalities working out a cost sharing agreement. In a December meeting between the municipalities a con- sensus could not be arrived on how Van Wieren's salary could be split up. At the meeting it was decided to continue the existing arrangement for another year with each municipality looking after its financial arrangements with Van Wieren. Van Wieren said the salary arrangement would allow the village to be better protected. In his report Van Wieren said permits totalling $247,246 had been issued in 1978. Slowly but -surely, the village is making progress on the Rich- mond street drain with the ministry of tran- sportation and com- munications finally signing the drain petition six months after it was initiated by the village. The drain which has been in the works •for a number of years will run on Richmond Street from Wellington to Highway 4 and along Highway 4 to the southerly limits of the town. While there has been no firm cost set, it's estimated the village's share could be $65,000. Reeve Harold Knight' stated "I don't know of anything that's been more trying,” and. said the drain was really more .important than • the sanitary sewers. Received a letter from C.H. Lewis of Lucan informing the village of their waste disposaland container services. Agreed once again to set up a meeting between Willard Buchanan, the OPP, Hensall Motors and the village, in an attempt to resolve the dispute about pyked cars and snow removal.
