Stangs share second in OJ1L.A
by Brian Marriage
The Clinton Mustangs
gained a share of second
place last weekend in
OHA Junior C action,
with a 6-6 tie against
Walkerton and a 9-5
victory over Port Elgin 9-
5.
During Friday night's
naturally
speaking
}
game, the Stangs played
a rather sloppy game,
enabling the cellar -
dwelling Black Hawks to
tie them. The Stangs out-
scored them three to one
in the first period on goals
by Bill Lewis, Paul
Helesic and Bill Peters.
In the second period,
If someone on your Christmas list is a hunter,
fisherman or general outdoorsman, you're
lucky. This type of person is extremely easy to
please when it comes to buying a gift.
A fisherman can own two stores full of tackle
but his eyes will still light up at an assortment of
lures and spinners. Every tackle box could use a
set of scales to shrink that 30 pound fish down to a
more believable 10 or 12. A filleting knife also
makes a great'gift, but get a good one. The blade
should be long and thin with a handle that is
designed to make the knife float if accidentally
dropped overboard. The Ruko shark is my
personal choice.
Hunters are just about as mad as fishermen
when it comes to collecting gear and
paraphernalia for their sport. Ammunition is
always a good choice as is anew compass. Warm
wool socks for the duck blind or a heavy wool
shirt for the deer camp are also a good choice.
A• good knife can make a fine gift for the out-
door person, but choose one that is practical. The
Alamo is not likely to be fought again so Bowie
knives are not really needed. Buffalo` skinners
are a little out of date as well. The trend today is
to quality belt knives and lock back folders with
a belt pouch. It's hard to beat a dropped point'
knife with a blade between three and four inches
long. A knife like this is capable of any chore
from dressing out a cottontail to preparing a
moose for the frying pan. Expect to pay $20 to $30
for a good production knife of this description.
If you want to do something a little special for
your favorite hunter, buy him a custom made
knife. Andre Bajkor of 123 Alpine St., Hamilton,
Ontario, L9A 1A7 (416-547-6136) is one of the
better knifemakers in Ontario. He hand crafts a
wide variety of styles and shapes that are not
only functional and well designed, but a real
work of art to look at. I had the opportunity to
examine and use two examples of his work at our
deer camp this fall and have to report that they
easily exceeded all my expectations.
The true beauty of these knives have to be seen
to be appreciated. Andre's standard line of Drop
Point Hunters are made from 1/8" steel and
range between $55 and $75 in price. His deluxe
variety is crafted from three -sixteenth inch steel
and varies from $75 to $95. The range of prices
depends on the quality of micarta used in the
handles with the top of the line in both series
being shaped from fine ivory.
The price of these knives does not include a
sheath. Sheaths are available ,by custom order,
however, and cost approximately $12 to $15
extra. If you wish to purchase one of these
beauties (a limited supply is available for
Christmas), send a money order to Andre Bajkor
at the above address. Be sure to specify whether
you want the 1/4" Standard Drop Point Hunter or
the three -sixteenth inch Deluxe Drop Point
Hunter. Don't forget to include seven percent
sales tax and $3 to cover postage and insurance.
The recipient of any one of these gifts will not
only have a good and useful gift, they'll also
appreciate the thought that went behind it.
Walkerton scored twice
and Clinton scored only
once from the stick of
Phil Arthur,
After Clinton scored
twice early in the third
period, the Black Hawks
rebounded with three
unanswered goals to gain
the tie. The Clinton
marksmen in the third
period were Tim McLean
and Bill Lewis.
In the Sunday af-
ternoon contest, the
Stangs scored four
unanswered third period
goals to enable them to
defeat Port Elgin 9-5.
Clinton scored three
goals in the first period to
the Bears' one. Tim
McLean fired a single
while Steve Arbour
notched a pair.
The second period
belonged to the Bears as
they scored four goals to
Clinton's two and tied the
game at five apiece
heading into the final
frame. The two Mustangs
marksmen were Dave
Stephenson and Phil
Arthur.
The third period
marksmen for Clinton
were Steve Arbour with
his third, Dave
Stephenson with his
second and singles by
Mike Gibbings and Paul
Dougherty,
The Mustangs will host
the Arthur Eagles this
Friday night at 8:30 p.m.
in Brussels. This will be
the first appearance for
the Stangs in the new
Brussels arena and it is
hoped a good turnout will
show up and support the
Mustangs.
The Mustangs are also
holding their Christmas
party this coming
Saturday night at the
community centre at 9
p:m. and are hoping that
Santa Claus will show up
with a bag of tricks to
enable them to overtake
the Listowel Cyclones
and Kincardine Kinucks.
Smile
I believe in the two- -
party system, but not in
the same night.
It's only a few weeks now until the Clinton arena is ready, and workmen are
busy putting back the boards that were removed during construction of the new
floor. The new tractor room is nearing completion, and special glass will be put
at the ends to replace the screen. (News -Record photo)

Weather hurts figure skating bazaar
If the weather could
have cooperated as well
as our parents and
skaters on our bazaar
evening, Dec. 1, we might
have had more
customers. Flowers of
congratulations should
have been handed to the
people who did come, for
the walking and driving
weather was terrible!
Parents, you're the
best! A record was kept
of those who contributed
and it was heartwarming
to witness the resounding
and generous response.
Donations of attractively
decorated Christmas
baking, hand crafts and
decorations filled several
tables.
The answer to what to
do with the table loads of
unsold articles was
solved when the
executive of the Zeta
Omega Chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi was contacted.
Arrangements were
made 'to5 ;continue our
Christmas bonanza at
their bazaar the following
day Dec, 2.
This proved successful
and we extend our ap-
preciation to the Zeta
Omega Chapter for our
accommodation. We
thank all Who helped in
anyway.
