From deep in the
recesses of a storage box
marked "Christmas
decorations" she lifted a
delicate glass ball.
Balancing it in the palm
of her hand she turned it
slowly and while the fat
little Santa painted on it
smiled back to her, the
years fell away one by
one. There was the
Christmas when a dear
"Gan" had first
presented the decoration
to her two small gran-
dsons for them to help
decorate the tree.
Somehow, with each
succeeding year, Santa
Ball as he came to be
known always managed
to be hung on the tree
centre front where he
would be sure of at-
tention. Fat, round and
jolly he exuded that
special charm so con-
tagious to young and old
alike.
Gently she laid the
Santa. ball, down, ready
once again when the time
for this year's decorating
comes to take his place.
Should he ever break, as
break he could, the
memories linking the
years would still un-
broken be.
