The Ladies' Auxiliary
to the Scouts, Cubs,
Guides, Brownies and
Beavers held a most
successful evening at St.
Andrew's United Church
on Tuesday, November 7
with several events
planned to raise money
for the needs of the dif-
ferent groups.
There was a bake sale,
a craft demonstration of
Christmas articles, by
Margaret Garrett and
Hilda Cooper, a Sara
Coventry jewelry
presentation by Doris
Ellison of Goderich and a
Dutch Auction with a
Dutch lady as the auc-
tioneer.
There was a door prize -
a cake - artistically
decorated by Margaret
Garrett which was won
by Eva Darnbrough.
Tickets were sold on a
piece of Sara Coventry
jewelry which was won
by Sharon Sinnamon. The
Dutch auctioneer turned
out to be Ann Chapman,
cleverly disguised
complete with wooden
shoes.
Auxiliary members
were very pleased at the
large attendance and at
the proceeds which were
realized and wish to
thank those who
demonstrated their
wares. Thanks also to
Ann Chapman. The group
will sponsor a Tup-
perware party, Tuesday,
November 21 at 8 pm at
the hyme of Joyce
Chilton. Everybne is
welcome.
The Huronview Auxiliary is always raising funds for various projects at the
county home, and this fall raised money for a new television set for the home
and last week presented it to administrator Chester Archibald, left. Presenting

Historical Society learns of cabins
John Hindmarsh of
Goderich entertained
members of the Bayfield
Historical Society on
Monday evening with his
saga of the restoration of
many of Huron County's
log cabins into com-
fortable homes. He was
introduced by his friend
Norm McComb who lives
in a restored log house.
Using his friend, as a foil
for his stories of the
`perils' involved in
reconstruction Mr.
Hindmarsh created the
impression that the hard
work involved has its
amusing side!
Mr. Hindmarsh told of
the `finds' he has made
when taking down these
homes of yesteryear,
bones of dead rats,
snakeskins, tobacco juice
stains, honey, wasps'
nests, old letters,
newspapers etc.
Resurrected from the
length and breadth of
Huron County, and shorn
of their tin, asbestos,
insul-brick and clapboard
coverings, the log cabins
are made comfortably
habitable again and add
to the picturesqueness of
the landscape. He
illustrated his talk with
slides of some of the
restored buildings. Mr.
Hindmarsh was thanked
for his interesting story
by Mrs. Vina Parker,
Kelvin Jervis
presented an
enlargement of a very old
photograph, thought to be
the main street of
Bayfield. The original
was presented to the
Society by Mrs. Myrtle
Robinson. It is a great
conversation piece. I's it
or isn't it the main street?
It will be in the archives
room. Drop in and give

Rev. Thomas speaks to club
Rev_. Alun Thomas,
minister of St. Andrew's
United Church in
Bayfield gave an
enlightening talk last
week . to the Goderich
Rotary Club on his tenure
in Newfoundland. The
story was written by Rae
Fraser.
Newfoundland in a
word means romance,
hardship, confederation
and Joey Smallwood. Not
claiming to be a Joey
Smallwood, Alun Thomas
brought a story of
romance, hard living
conditions, and friendly
people. In 1976 Alun
accepted a call to
minister to five charges
after graduation from the
University of Wales in
Swansea.
Rev. Thomas was born
of Welsh parents in
Wales but emigrated to
Canada with them when
he was two years old. His
father joined the
Canadian Armed Forces
and the family lived in
Quebec and Alberta.
After a posting to Ger-
many for 1961-65 the
family lived in Calgary.
Returning to Wales in
1969, Alun studied for the
ministry.
Arriving in Gander on a
Saturday and in St.
Anthony on Monday he
found he had five chur-
ches under his charge -
the farthest being 80
miles away and he was
without a car or a
driver's license. Lear-
ning to drive and driving
on Newfy roads was an
unusual experience to say
the least.
Finding himself in an
area with a Wesleyan
Methodist background
and 18th and 19th century
ideas created some
problems in getting
acquainted with people
who set the minister on a
pedestal.
Locked doors were
practically unknown
among those friendly and
trusting people. It was an
accepted custom to walk
into anyone's house
without knocking - the
only door you might
knock on was the
bedroom. It was custom
to stay for a meal as no
matter how many were at
the table there was
always food for one more.
It was said Joey
Smallwood dragged
Newfoundland kicking
and screaming into the
20th century. This was a
real culture shock
especially to those with
only grade 4 or 5. In fact
in this area there were
several who could not
read or write at all. Their
big hearts were not aj<r
fected.
At Flowers Cove one
man ran a store and
delivered moose meat to
his customers when times
were tough. Visiting
Sammy a 300 lb. friend he
always found two plates
on the table for each.
Meat was on a separate
plate because there was
too much on the other
plate already. When Alun
left he had tears in his
eyes - illiteracy did not
affect his feelings for a
friend.
Community meetings
were a great place for
speeches but as the
speaker you were not
guaranteed all the time
