We're back by Richard Brown Hello! There I have started. I'm the new editor and this is" ob- viously my first editorial. Here I sit in the Chronicle office, munching on a chicken sandwich amongst old papers, tin cans, paint brushes and other debris. We are in the midst of renovating the office. I'd like to welcome those who are new here and those that have come back. To those grade nines who are wandering around the school won- dering about the future, relax! Those teachers are not that bad. Some of them seem to come close to being human at times. As for students, you only have one major em- barrassment from them - Initiation Day! The paper will welcome any new members. The paper has many facets - writing, art work, business among others. The paper itself wiltput out its first monthly in October. Many of last year's staff ate back and we still have good old Mr. Smith for staff adviser. There is a place for you. If you wish to join drop in to the newspaper office in 208 after school today (Thursday) . In conclusion, I wish you good luck for the year and may the devil be at your back and the wind .know you're dead half an hour before. Wait - no, that's not right... Cross country 'team practices The cross country team at CHSS has begun early this year. Weekly practices began in July with a number of people attending. The team hopes to improve upon last year's performance. Mr. Ludwig, the coach, is still looking for new members, so anyone who is interested should contact him in room 301. Grade nine recruits are especially welcome. Don't be shy. MVCA manages water resources The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority was first organized as the Middle Maitland 'Con- servation Authority, established by an Order - in -Council on September 6, 1951. The Authority began to implement. a conservation program in the watershed of the Middle Maitland River based to a large extent on recommendations outlined—in the Middle Maitland Conservation Report (1954) . In the ensuing years, it became increasingly evident that in order to effectively carry out a comprehensive con- servation program, it would be ` necessary to enlarge the original Middle Maitland Con- servation Authority to include the entire Maitland River drainage area. This was ac- complished by ex- pansions in 1962, 1972 and 1975. The Lucknow River watershed was included under the jurisdiction of the Maitland V lie a y Conservation Authority in 1976 thus bringing the total area of management to 3,014 square kilometres. The Authority's major mandate is the management of the water resources within its watershed, Member municipalities are in- formed of impending flood conditions through the establishment and maintenance of a flood warming system established and main- tenance of a flood war- ning system for all portions of the water- shed. The acquisition of critical flood -plain and flood storage areas in rural 'and urban portions of the watershed has been DANCE CORNROAST 1 at the Pineridge Chalet R.R. 2, HENSALL SAT. SEPT. 9-- 9 p.m. -1 a.m. featuring CANADA'S NUMBER 1 COUNTRY BAND by Kathy Phillips The 1978-79 Chronicle *ill be led by editor Richard Brown under the/ guidance of Mr. Ron Smith. We hope to con- tinue both our weekly and monthly issues of the Chronicle. We would like to present a newspaper which deals with all aspects of life in our school and with all students -- in both the junior and senior grades. Your ideas are always welcome and can be placed in the box in the library. The Chronicle now has an office in room 208. It will be our headquarters for this year until the paper ceases to exist (perish the thought!). Mr. Philips alloted us this space last June and we have decorated it with his permission. Everyone is invited to stop in and see our work of art. With the loss of staff due to the graduation of members from CHSS, we find we badly need new members. All sections of the paper need more writers and we will welcome anyone who is willing to participate in making our paper even better. ' We would especially like to see grade nines and tens who will eventually take over after we leave. We have the same sections this year as we did last year. They are: Cheerleaders win During the summer, eight of our CHSS cheerleaders journeyed to Ottawa to compete in a special cheerleading course. Along with the squad championship, the girls won the spirit racket for being the most en- thusiastic group and took one excellent and three superior ribbons. On top of this, Lori Wise beat out 17 other girls to news, features, sports, business, art, and en- tertainment. Editors are still needed for the news and art sections -- volunteers are welcome. The other sections are headed by the following people: business, Greg Wise; sports, Mike Thomson; en- tertainment, Janet Eastman; features, Kathy Philips. Remember, to make this paper a success we need your support. Other non-structural management tools such as rural fill line and urban floodplain, map - 'ping help to identify environmental hazard zones thus contributing to proper land use and safe development. Man-made channel improvements have been implemented to reduce the irinpact of 'flood `fled while a swampland acquisition program is directed at preserving areas that act as natural reservoirs. The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority has no direct power in pollution control but does co-operate very closely with the Ministry of the Environment by carrying out a water quality testing program on the Maitland River and its tributaries. The baby squirrel, which was. abandoned by its mother, was nursed back tohealth by Peter with an eye dropper and now the youngster, named 011ie, is Pete's best friend. (News - Record photo) Passionate love story by, Paul Newland As their eyes met, he let out a long sigh. She quickly withdrew at the smell of raw onions and garlic. They gradually drew closer together. He started to run his fingers through her soft long '4 -hair: After the first jent ;' luscious kiss, she drew close. to his ear and whispered passionately, "You got gum?" "Yes". "May I have some?" "No" "Why not?" "It's in my mouth." "I must have it!" Their lips drew close together once more and his tongue deposited the warm, wet gum on her fresh, sweet tongue. FRI., SAT., SUN.
