Hire a student week
The Canada Manpower
Centre for Students would
like to announce hire -a -
student week will be held
in Huron County June 19
through 23.
Hire -a -student week is
organized each year to
bring to the attention of
the local business
community and
homeowners the needs of
many students for em-
ployment.
The mayors of
Goderich, Clinton,
Seaforth, and Exeter
have all been contacted
and agreed to support
hire -a -student week. The
towns of Goderich,
Clinton and Exeter will
issue a hire -a -student
proclamation to be
published in their local
newspaper.
Letters have been
mailed to the reeves of
the townships asking for
their official support of
hire -a -student week.
Churches of the area
have also been contacted
asking for their support.
In addition, advertising
has been arranged by the
student centre through
the local media. It is felt
that these efforts will
result in a greater
community awareness of
student hiring.
Playhouse sets opening
The Huron Country
Playhouse in Grand Bend
will hold an Open House
on Sunday afternoon,
June 24 between the
hours of 2 and 4 p.m. The
general public can have a
tour of the Playhouse,
through the workshops,
rehearsal halls, grounds,
lounge quarters, offices
and of course back stage.
Members of the 1978
Company, the Board and
staff will be on hand to
guide the visitors from
point to point, answer
questions and serve light
refreshments at the
conclusion of the tour.
The public is entitled to
attend the Open House for
which there is no charge.
A Gala Dance and
Monte Carlo night will
kick off the Huron
Country Playhouse
season on Saturday, June
24. Hundreds are ex-
pected to attend the event
which is given each year
for season ticket holders.
This year regular ad-
mission to the dance,
which features music by
Joe Fieder, will also be
available.
Monte Carlo Casino
night is being added to
the night of festivities.
Food and drink will be
availabale at the event
which begins at 9 p.m.
Fireworks will
augment the Huron
Country Playhouse
opening on Tuesday, July
4. Directly following the
performance of Neil
Simon's The Odd Couple,
the show's stars Jack
Duffy and Les Carlson,
will cut a huge cake
which will be served to
the crowd of first
nighters. A capacity
attendance is expected at
the opening of the
Playhouse's Seventh
season.
Bingo results
Nancy Fawcett of
Stratford will be able to
pay for her new car a
little easier now since she
won the $1,000 jackpot at
the Clinton Monster
Bingo on Monday night.
She just purchased the
auto Monday morning.

Superannuated Teachers
Association held heir
semi-annual dinner
meeting. A delightfully
pleasant assortment of
Cocktails were served
prior to the dinner. Miss
Melba McElroy,
president of the Huron
County STA chaired the
dinner meeting.
The group thoroughly
enjoyed the roast beef
dinner served by our own
Ladies Auxiliary. The
guest speakerfor, the
occasion was Jack
Easthaugh, who has just
returned from a trip to
Russia. He talked to the
gathering of his ex-
periences and ob-
servations of his travels
through parts of Russia.
Mr. Easthatigh advised
anyone contemplating a
trip to Russia should be in
sound physical health.
Frank Madill from the
Ontario Senate of
Superannuated Teachers
presented a report on the
organizations overall
situation and how it has
grown over the past
years.
Legion wise, not too
much activity except for
the usual TGIF' Friday

Midwestern Ontario
has acquired a new
organization. Fourteen
weavers and spinners
from Bruce, Huron and
Perth counties met
recently in Blyth to form
the "Huron Tract
Spinners and Weavers
Guild".
Ruth Knight of
Goderich, the first
president of the fledgling
organization, said that
the purpose of the guild is
to promote an increased
awareness and
knowledge of the value of
handcrafted spinning and
weaving to the public.
She said that a guild is
an excellent vehicle for
local weavers to learn
from one another. For
that reason, there are
tentative plans for
workshops, first with
guild members' talent,
but possibly later with
outside teachers.
Weaving is an old craft
in the Huron Tract. One
of the best known
weavers from old is
Samuel Pentland, who
arrived in Huron County
in 1845, and whose loom is
still on display at the
Royal Ontario Museum in
Toronto.
Mrs. Knight said that
some research into the
history of weaving in the
Huron Tract may be a
future project.
Mrs. Evelyn Hardy of
Goderich was elected
vice-president. Secretary
is Mrs. Mary McLeod of
Seaforth and treasurer is
John Kerr of Belgrave.
Beginners and ex-
perienced spinners and
weavers are welcome to
attend the meetings.
Plans are being made for
workshops to be held in
the summer and fall.
There is to be a nature -
dyeing works -hop in
August.

leavers club formed
Midwestern Ontario
has acquired a new
organization. Fourteen
weavers and spinners
from Bruce, Huron and
Perth counties met
recently in Blyth to form
the "Huron Tract
Spinners and Weavers
Guild".
Ruth Knight of
Goderich, the first
president of the fledgling
organization, said that
the purpose of the guild is
to promote an increased
awareness and
knowledge of the value of
handcrafted spinning and
weaving to the public.
She said that a guild is
an excellent vehicle for
local weavers to learn
from one another. For
that reason, there are
tentative plans for
workshops, first with
guild members' talent,
but possibly later with
outside teachers.
Weaving is an old craft
in the Huron Tract. One
of the best known
weavers from old is
Samuel Pentland, who
arrived in Huron County
in 1845, and whose loom is
still on display at the
Royal Ontario Museum in
Toronto.
Mrs. Knight said that
some research into the
history of weaving in the
Huron Tract may be a
future project.
Mrs. Evelyn Hardy of
Goderich was elected
vice-president. Secretary
is Mrs. Mary McLeod of
Seaforth and treasurer is
John Kerr of Belgrave.
Beginners and ex-
perienced spinners and
weavers are welcome to
attend the meetings.
Plans are being made for
workshops to be held in
the summer and fall.
There is to be a nature -
dyeing works -hop in
August.
