Clinton News-Record, 1978-05-18, Page 2PAGE 2—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY. MAY 18, 1978 Today, Wednesday - the column is always typed on a Wednesday) my guardian angel must be hovering near. Coming up the Bayfield Road at eight o'clock this morning my gas guage finger pointed right to the big E for empty and then I hit a two mile detour at Middleton's Church - at that moment my worry guage went up to full, - but the old Astre made it and t1:.. outskirts of Clinton never looked so welcome. • Thanks to Jim Fitzgerald for keeping the column perking last week. The painting project at home only served to confirm my earlier suspicions that my mission in life was never destined to be even remotely connected with paint and paintbrush (wall type). Police week May 14 to May 20 has been designated across Canada as Police Week. With this special week, Chief Lloyd Westlake and his force at the Clinton Police Department have issued a special invitation to the public to visit the town's police station. As well, the Goderich detachment of the OPP has set up a special display at the Suncoast Mall in Goderich for the public to view. The theme for this year's week is, working together to prevent crime. Lin anis, the three major objectives shared by all law en- forcement agencies are: to keep the peace; the prevention of crime; the detection and apprehension of criminals. According to H.H. Graham, commissioner for the OPP, it is imperative that the citizens that are served by the law have a greater understanding of the role of the police and accept their share of the responsibility for main- taining a safe and healthy com munity. Top congratulations this week must go to all the cast of Guys and Dolls who over- came a serious time deficit to practise on and come up with three nights' commendable performances, thus keeping up the tradition of other CHSS musicals. Vjith the financial aid of the Clinton Lions Club, the untiring efforts of many teachers, parents and other helpful citizens these Clinton District Young Players fully earned their applause. + ++ Lest Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Williams, RR4 Clinton travelled to Lindsay, Ontario to be present when younger son Bruce graduated from Sir Sanford Fleming College as a Geological Technician. He has already left for his work with a uranium detection crew in northern Saskatchewan. + + + Of interest to many civilians and former armed forces members here, is the news that a past commanding officer of CFB Clinton, Brig. Gen. Keith Greenaway, received an Honourary Doctorate Degree in Military Science on April 23, 1978 in Victoria, B. C. The degree was conferred at the con- vocation ceremony held at Royal Roads Military College. Mrs. Hazel Greenaway was present to see her husband honoured and daughter, Linda, a stewardess with Wardair was also able to attend. Canada's Minister of National Defence, Hon. Barney Danson and Mrs. Danson were among the asembled guests. Although Brigadier Greenaway retired officially last December, his interest in the military is as keen as ever. At present he is National President of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute. He is also a former recipient of the famed McKee Trophy awarded annually for outstanding achievement in the field of air operations. + + + Wynne and Bob Homuth have returned after two days spent in Toronto with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Horton and young daughter Holly. +++ There will be a Canadian Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic on Tuesday, May 30 at CHSS. There's always a need for blood - but the urgency heightens during .the for- thcoming summer holiday months, especially on long weekends. + ++ Be sure to look in next week's News -Record for an article by Shelley McPhee outlining the "new look" of the Clinton Nursery School. This fine institution will become even better as the Wesley -Willis school for tots goes Parent Co-op. On the coming events page of this paper is an advertisement outlining the details of an open meeting for all con- cerned. Do plan to attend. + ++ Anyone who will be at the dance to be held this Satur- day, May 20 in Clinton Community Centre sponsored by the Clinton Lions Club, besides having a good time will be supporting an equally good cause - "Leader Dogs for the Blind". The school where these dogs are trained and placed with their blind student masters is located at Rochester, 25 miles north of Detroit, Michigan. Over 4,000 blind people have passed through the gates of the school. The brass plaques on the doors of the school commemorate the many Lions Clubs who have un- selfishly given of their time and money to make the Leader Dog School what it is today. There is no charge for a Leader Dog or any part of the four week training program. It costs the school ap- proximately $4.000 for each team. Our own Clinton Lions are donating the proceeds of Saturday's dance to this very fine cause. Shoemaker Literaiy contest open Public library patrons with literary skills will soon be able to compete for $1,500 in the 1978 Dorothy Shoemaker Literary Contest for prose and poetry. ' The contest, sponsored by public libraries in the Mid- western regional library system, is open to all library patrons in the region of Waterloo and in Perth, Huron and Wellington counties. Entry forms and contest rules are now available in local libraries. The contest officially opened May 1. Entriesmust be received no later than Monday, October 2 to be eligible for the contest. Named in honour of a former chief librarian at Kitchener public library, the contest last year attracted more than 1,100 entries from all age groups in prose and poetry categories. "The number of entries grows every year." said Bill Zambusi, Midwestern's co- ordinator of programs and services, "and this year we are expecting another record." It is hoped that two noted Canadian authors will be available to judge the contest and to present the awards at a special ceremony at Cam- bridge public library on Friday. November 24. The names of the judges are expected to be announced shortly. Last year authors Miriam Waddington and Constance Beresford Howe presented the awards in Stratford_ The Dorothy Shoemaker Literary contest was originally sponsored by the Kitchener public library. But the contest became so popular that it has now been extended to include all libraries in the Midwestern region. Mary Grigg, president of the Golden Radars presented the Clinton Hospital Auxiliary with a cradle made by Ernie Dale, of Clinton. Auxiliary staff, Marg Coventry and Barb Hicks, presented the gift. The cradle will be raffled off at the auxiliary's booth at the spring fair. He refuses to pay for the damages or even to inform his insurance company because he says he doesn't want his rates to go up. He says he has no money so it won't do any good to sue him. Is there no way I can recover the amount of t damages to my car? Yes' By section 225 of the Insurance Act. if you recover judgement against him in court you can have his in- surance company pay the damages owed directly to you. The rule does not apply in this type of situation. You purchased a house you believed to be in excellent condition. Instead you bought one with a latent defect. which had been concealed by the vendor. This gives rise to an error in substance between what you contracted to huy and what you received. I am seeking a divorce and want to obtain one as cheaply as I can. It was my intention to work through one of those "do- it-yourself, divorce firms", but a couple of girls where I work have told me that they are all a big racket. If they are right then how come these firms are allowed to stay in business? Could your column give- me some advice on this matter? The firms that advertise do- it-yourself divorces. do give. (as a general rule) exactly what they advertise. namely. non -legal assistance to people who wish to handle the divorce proceedings themselves. In many cases this has worked out successfully, but in many other cases a person has found that, for one cause or another. a lawyer is essential and a judge may so indicate. YOU'RE VH(STL(PJ'..
