Resource centre workshop
This week there will be a
workshop 'at the Resource
Centre conducted by Barb
Zettler from the Energy
Conservation office in
Goderich. She will be
discussing home insulation
and energy saving tips for
around the home from 10-
11 :30 on Thursday April 27.
The following Thursday, at
the same time and place,
there will be a Health Clinic
sponsored by the Huron
County Health Unit. Nurses
will be there to provide im-
munization, vision and
hearing screening, flouride
brushing, Denver Develop-
mental test and counselling.
On May 11 there will be a
representative from the
Block Parents Association to
speak to the community.
Jennefer Webb who was
responsible for setting up
Block Parents in Kincardine,
will speak to the community
on the growing importance of
such safety measurers for_
children. She will also discuss
how this was done in Kin-
cardine and other areas and
the value to the coomunity of
such an association.
On April 13, the Resource
Centre held another sucessful
plant show with Sandra Pitt.
Sandra again filled the
Resource area with beautiful
plants. We were able to raise
a small amount towards
summer programming
through Sandra's program
which was much appreciated.
We are also planning another
event for June that will
hopefully raise more money
for supplies for summer
programs.
The Resource Centre is
sponsoring a community
dance on June 16 at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre.
Mr. Gary Boyle of "Mystery
Train" has offered his band
for this event for a small fee.
The theme for the dance will
be a "fifties" one. We are
hoping everyone will plan on
joining in the fun of this
event.
Any proceeds will. be
towards summer programs
for the children in the Com-
munity. Anyone interested in
helping plan this event can
contact the Resource Centre.
Teens to help with clean-up
Our last meeting was held
on April 21 when everyone
played cards and games.
They from 7:30 to 9:00 we
played bingo, with 12 win-
ners.
Vanastrians! Please
remember that this Saturday
April 29, the Vanastra Teen
Club working with the
Community Association will
be holding their spring clean-
up. You can still sponsor a
teen by contacting anyone
connected ' with these
organizations. Have you got
any odd jobs around the
home? Community teenagers
are itching to help you.
Whether it's yard or home
care, you'll find the help you
need at 482-7972.

Friday, April 21 and went to
the Recreation Centre to play

to bring a small plastic jug
for your Mother's Day gift!
The Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority has a busy spring ahead of them, as one of
the jobs they are doing this year is planting 130,000 trees, twice as many as last year. Most
of the trees will be machine planted, as shown here at Clinton this week. Lee Hodgert left,
and Judy Simmons plant silver maples. (News -Record photo)
Authority to plant 135,000 trees
In its continuing
reforestation program, the
Ausable-Bayfield Con-
servation Authority will be
planting about 135,000 trees
this year, twice as many as
last year.
Each spring for the past
several years, the Authority
has planted trees on both
private property, and their
own conservation areas.
The trees provided wildlife
habitat, as well as protecting
soils from • wind and water
erosion. They provide win-
dbreaks for farms, and as
well as maintaining soil
moisture, trees planted now
can provide forest resources
for the future.
The Authority has a new
program this year, called
hand -planting subsidy, where
they provide the private
owner with cash if he plants
his own trees on fence cor-
ners, steep slopes, or other
areas where machine
planting is impossible.
About 5,400 seedlings are
expected to be planted under
the new ,program, while
another 44,000 will be planted
on private land.
The Authority also hopes to
plant about another 86,000
trees on public property.
As well, the Authority
provides larger trees from
two to three feet high for
establishment or
replacement of windbreaks.

About 25 persons will likely be out of jobs this July, as Kaufman Footwear is closing its
Vanastra plant. The firm blames high employee turnover, as one of the reasons the plant
is being phased out. (News -Record photo)
Guides plan banquet for moms
Last Thursday evening the
Vanastra Guides were able to
complete their macrame

requirements for their
creative craft badge.
This week the new Guides
will be starting their Ten-
derfoot, while others will be
working on first aid and other
badges. The mother and
daughter banquet is to be held
on May 31 at the Vanastra

Public school treated
This week we were for-
tunate enough to borrow a
trampolene from the
Wingharn Public School and
some gymnastics apparatus
from the Clinton Public
School. We really appreciate
the excellent co-operation
that we have received this
year from the other county
schools.
On Tuesday, the public
health nurses were at our
school as part of their dental
program. Flouride treat-
ments were provided for all
pupils who wanted to take
advantage of this free public
service.
We are presently trying to
come up with a school
mascot. If you have an idea
please give us a call. We
would like to thank all the
adults who supported our
Education Week activities.
Calorie counters examine diets
