The Exeter Times
Advocate reported to its
readers last week that
Exeter's Mayor Bruce Shaw
won't be seeking re-election
in November.
Mayor Shaw told the town
council members that he
would be 36 and will be
looking forward to
retirement. Mayor Shaw
noted that he made the early
announcement in order that
the council and community
can have time to seek
someone else to replace hi.rn
come election time.
• The Huron Expositor
reported that after 15 months
of negotiations 361 Perth
elementary school teachers
have accepted a salary in-
crease of 7.99 percent over
last year.
The average salary for an
elementary school teacher
this year will be $16,715. Last
year the same teacher
collected a salary of $15,436.
In the lowest category the
salary of an elementary
teacher in Perth will be $9,185
to $12,908 and in the top
section a teacher could make
anywhere from $14,301 to
$25,835.
Principals in schools with
400 students or more will earn
ill$28,740 to $30,540. Principals
in schools of less than 274
pupils will. make $26,374 to
$28,074 a year.
Education seems to be a
main topic for front page
news in most counties. The
Kincardine News reported
that the Bruce County Board
of Education recently ap-
proved their budget of
$21,520,244, an increase of 6.8
percent over the 1977 budget
of $20,147,387.
Along with the budget in -
cease comes a taxpayers'
increase of 4-2 percent in
education tax this year for
Bruce residents.
Finance chairman Cam
MacAuley explained that the
increased costs in 1978 were
due to the fact that the
province has reduced the rate
of grants paid to county
school boards in the last
number of years.
The Listowel Banner
reported this week that a
provincial bridge survey
report completed by the
ministry of transportation
and communication stated
that the bridges on Main and
Wallace Streets in Listowel
which form a portion of the
conduit should be replaced.
The survey stated that the
bridges, "approach critical
deficiencies for safe
loading."
Hay Township council have
decided not to support the
idea of setting up a reserve
fund for the Exeter and Area
fire board, the Zurich
Citizens News reported.
The Goderich Town Council
has a rather smelly problem
on their hands, reported the
Goderich Signal Star, and the
problem is skunks.
Council learned at their last
regular meeting that some
properties in Goderich are
being invaded by skunks and
council has been asked to get
rid of the problem.
Council members bandied
with the idea that killer traps
be made available to people
who have a skunk problem.
There would be a $10 deposit
fee for the trap, to be
refunded when the trap was
returned.
There was some objection
that the town not get into the
"killing" business and it was
also noted that dogs and cats
might get caught in trap. The
proposal was finally left for
further investigation.
The Mitchell Advocate
reported that the members of
the Mitchell council are
considering the idea of having
local residents voice their
problems to the town's
government on television.
The manager of the local
cable television company has
offered the council air time
one night a month in which a
question period would be
aired`.

Miss Matheson, 19, said
that she didn't know that she
was getting her father into
any real trouble, he has been
charged with pointing a
firearm and possession of a
dangerous weapon. Miss
Matheson said in court that
she had lied in stating that
her father had held out a gun
during a statement given
after the incident in August.
She said that when the
statement was given to the
police she was"upset" and
had taken several nerve pills
belonging to Miss Pickard
during the evening.
It came out in the testimony
that Miss Matheson had been
seeing Doug Pickatd, a
brother of Theresa's and that
Chief Matheson was not
happy about the association.
Miss Matheson said that she
wanted to say something
"nasty" about her father at
the time of the original
statement because she
"disliked" him at the time. •
