Clinton News-Record, 1978-02-02, Page 8PAGE 8—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1978
Through the other weeklies
The Wingham Advance -
Times reported that the block
parent program is now in full
swing in the town as presently
114 residences have been
designated as block parent
homes.
However, according to
chainan Rick Whiteley,
most of the homes are con-
centrated in one area of town,
leaving other areas poorly
serviced.
Another canvass may be
started in town to recruit
more block parents in all.
areas of Wingham. However
Whiteley hopes that more
homeowners will volunteer
their services for the
program.
In the meantime Constable
Tom Creeden of the Wingham
Police Force has been
speaking to students in the
schools about the program
and what they should do if an
emergency occurs. The
students were told that the
block parent homes are not
stop -overs for snacks, but are
just for emergencies.
The Huron Expositor
reported that close to 100
parents turned up at the
Seaforth District High School
for the first of a three-part
program focussing on sex
education and teenage
pregnancy.
The program is being
presented by the Huron
County Health Unit and the
staff of SDHS, if the majority
of the parents approve.
Bruce Shaw, principal of
SDHS said that the problem
of teenage pregnancy is very
real. There are presently five
teenage mothers in the
school, among the 390
students. He explained to the
parents that that is more than
at any other school in the
county.
He noted that the girls
involved in the pregnancies
were from grades 9, 10 and 11.
Shaw stressed the im-
portance of teaching sex
education in the younger
grades, not only in grades 12
and 13. He said that many
parents feel that sex
education should be taught in
the older grades, but younger
students should not be ex-
posed to it. However, he noted
that then it might be too late.
Despite a lack of com-
munity support,, the Goderich.
Community Grandstand
Committee has decided to
proceed with plans for a
grandstand to be built this
year.
The Goderich Signal -Star
reported that the grandstand
would be a no frills con-
struction. Originally a 1,200
seat grandstand had been
proposed and would cost
approximately $300,000.
However Larry Jeffrey,
committee chairman said a
similar grandstand as the one
built in Clinton ' would be
constructed for somewhel'e
between $211,000 and $230,000.
At that cost the community
would have to raise ap-
proximately $86,250 plus
interest costs, after grants.
Even if the group is to
proceed with the building this
spring, it is likely that the
Goderich Trotting
Association will miss some of
their racing dates which
begin May 28. The trotting
association has approached
the OAC with the problem.
Gary Harron, the Reeve of
Amabel Township was ap-
pointed the Warden of Bruce
County at the 1978 Inaugural
Session, The Lucknow Sen-
tinel reported.
Harron was elected over
Alvin Thompson, Reeveof
Kincardine Townsip,
another contender for the
position.
The Mitchell Advocate
reported to its readers that
the Town of Mitchell may
soon have a 24-hour taxi
service if Hank Schoonbeck
can make }such an effort pay.
Schoonbeck attended a
recent towrf council meeting
and was granted permission
to apply for a taxi license.
Schoonbeck has run a taxi
service in Mitchell for the
past four years but never
actually set up service there.
o However, if the license is
granted, Schoonbeck would
be allowed to operate cabs at
Toronto International Air-
port.
Some question was raised
whether Schoonbeck would
have enough calls to support
the business when it only
takes 20 m•nutesto walk from
one end of town to the other,
however, he said that
members of council would be
amazed at how many people
use taxis. He referred to his
operation in Orillia as a
comparison.
The Listowel Banner
reported that a safety
committee has been formed
by the Listowel Memorial
Hospital.
The committee will meet
once a month and within the
committee there will be an
inspection committee. The
inspection committee will
tour the hospital every two
weeks. The members of the
committee will make the
tours on a rotating basis.
the report from the in-
spection committee goes to
the,,safety committee who in
turn sends it to the hospital
administrator.
The Kincardine News
reported that Kenneth G.
McKinnon, a Port Elgin dairy
farmer has been re-elected as
chairman of the Ontario Milk
Marketing Board at a special
meeting in Toronto on
January 13.
He will represent milk

a bomb threat at the Kin-
cardine and District Com-
munity, Centre emptied the
building, and caused all the
activities of the day to be
called off.

The community centre
board refrained from issuing
a statement and the matter is
under investigation by the
Kincardine Police Force.
The week before the Kin-
cardine High School received
a bomb threat by a telephone
call which resulted in the
evacuation of the school.
