Our faithful town talker is
taking a well deserved rest
this week. However Peggy's
vacation may not. be a
lounging, around, lazy affair,
since she will be sorting out
the family possessions and
beginning to pack for the
Gibb's move to Bayfield.
Peggy keeps the News
Record staff ' informed
everyday, on the progression
of their n,e,w house just south
of Bayfield, which is hoped to
be completed soon.
-F -1-
In the meantime, I have
been elected, for this week, to
gather little tidbits of in-
teresting information from
the town. In case I have
missed anything, please give
Peggy a call next week.

It's that time of year again;
when pranks are played and
treats set out for the
creatures of the night. It looks
like some over-anfxious
youngsters already played
some pranks on Clinton by the
looks of the soap on downtown
business windows. Perhaps
the pranksters would con-
sider washing them too in
further ventures.

For other early Hallowe'en
'treaters, the Clinton News -

pumpkin full of suckers at the
office. Come in anytime after
Thursday to get a start on
your bag oi' goodies.

From Up Here
by Shelley McPhee
It's October 31st. You dream up a costume that will
completely disguise you and make you look ridiculous,
you plan silly pranks and you go from house to house
asking for treats or threatening with tricks.
When you think about it, Hallowe'en is really a strange
modern day custom yet actually it is no stranger or that
much different than the way our ancestors celebrated it.
All that is missin today is the superstition.
Centuries ago, Hallovve'en was celebrated as the feast
-of All Saints or All Hallows. The feast, on the last day of
the old .pagan calendar, celebrated summer's end,
winter's approach and remembering the dead.
Although I can understand the celebration of the
harvest time, how do the dead get involved in this? Well,
supposedly on this day Saman, the god of the dead, let
loose all his spirits who had occupied the bodies of
animals during the past year. This accounts for the idea
of ghosts and goblins and strange creatures of the night
connected with Hallowe'en.
Of course, no Hallowe'en would be complete without a
black cat and supposedly the Druids also thought of this.
They held cats sacred and thought they had once been
human beings who were changed as punishment for evil
deeds. (Maybe you should give your pet feline a second
look.)
Jack -o -lanterns were also used for Hallowe'en
celebrations centuries ago. These hollowed out turnips or
pumpkins with a lighted candle inside were used to scare
evil spirits from their homes. Traditions say that Irish
Jack was too wicked to stay in Heaven and was expelled
from hell for playing tricks on the devil. He was con-
demned to walk the earth with a candle until Judgment
day.
Most of the HalloWe'en traditions have remained ,,
almost the same as they were 100's of years ago. Trick or
treat, of a sort, was practiced by the Irish peasants in the
17th century. They would travel from house to house
asking for food in the name of St. Columba (ancient god
of the Irish clergy). Prosperity was promised to cheerful
givers and threats were made against unwilling donors.
Hallowe'en didn't appear on the North American
continent until the last half of the 19th century, probably
with Irish immigration and it has been celebrated since.
Despite the fact that the traditions and activities of
Hallowe'en haven't changed much, its context has.
Instead of prospering and celebrating a happy feast,
Hallowe'en has become a destructive occasion.
I'm a little disappointed with the modern day version
of Hallowe'en with its teenage uprisings, ripping the
town apart and '"candies and treats filled with razor
blades and poisons.
But then, maybe it's Saman's spirits and the Irish Jack
tormenting us.

As a teenager 1 went
through a "wild spell"
resulting in two terms in
prison. I have heard that there
is now a law in Ontario which''
prernits a person to get a
"clean slate" after a certain
time.
Can you tell me if this is
correct, and if so, how do I go
about it?
My thanks for any help you
can offer me.
Yes, we too have heard that
such a law does exist but must
confess that our knowledge
concerning it is rather sparse.
As far as we know it only
applies to certain first of-
fenders after a five year
period.
We have written the
Minister of Corrections in
Toronto for complete details
and will be pleased to forward
you on a copy of his reply.

Our helpful friend J.E. of
the Ontario Ministry of
Consumer and •.Commercial
Relations recently mailed
IMPACT a very informative
bulletin published to help the
public avoid home repair and
renovation rip-offs. Here are
some excerpts:
A common dodge in the
home renovating business is
the offer of a "good deal" by a
door-to-door salesman
because "we just happen to be
in the neighbourhood with all
our material and equipment."
Don't fall for that pressure
tactic. Ask the salesman far
the names of neighbours who
had work done and get their
opinion.
If you do decide to sign a
contract, find out who does the
actual work. In many cases,
the salesman may simply sell
the signed contract to another
company.
It's a good idea to keep an
eye on work in progress. You
may be able to spot problems
