Stangs tie league opener
Fridaynight
game erre

Last Friday night, the
Clinton Mustangs travelled to
Kincardine for the U.H.A.
Central Jr. "C" opener and
ended up in a tie with the
Kinucks, 2-2.
The Mustangs opened the
scoring in` the first period on a
goal by veteran Steve Cook
assisted. by Paul Helesic.
In, the second period ,the
Mustangs drew " first blood
again on a goal by John Hart
assisted by Pete Thompson
and Bill Roy.
The Kinucks battled back in
the last half of the second
period on goals by Mike Laine
and Paul Catto to tie the score
at two goals each.
The third period remained
scoreless and some excellent
goaltending by Dean Ryan
salvaged the tie as the Stangs
played shorthanded
throughout the third per.iod of
the game.
The game, which saw 115
penalty 'minutes, 47 to the
Muctnn1 s and 47 to the
Kinucks plus two -10 minute
misconducts, was a hard
hitting contest from the
opening minute on.
Paul Westlake, John Hart
and Dennis Knox all drew
fighting majors for the
Mustangs.
The Mustangs home opener
will be this Friday night at
8:30 p.m. when they will host
theWalkerton Black Hawks.
On Sunday night the Stangs
travel to Listowel to face the
defending champion Cyclones
at 7:30 p.m.

Will Knight, a four-year-old
gelding by Excel Knight - Fan
Will, owned by Ken Parke of
Zurich and John H. Lester of
Forest, was a winner in 2:01.4
at Mohawk Raceway on
October 4. Auburn Forbes N.
was .fourth for owner Wayne
Horner of Brucefield in the
same race.
Another of Wayne's horses,
Keystone Hartree, won at
Flamboro in 2:07.3 the
following night.
Friday night was the final
night of racing for the 1977
season at Elmira, Benmiller
Buddi, owned by Lois Van -
stone, was fourth in the fourth
race. John Muir was second
with Careless Andy for
Gerald Schenk of Crediton in
the fifth, ,while Dennis Jewitt
finished third with Golden
Chris, owned, by Franc Stroop
of Fordwich.
John Muir was third with
Apache Grey for Brian
Rutledge of Brussels.
Truanna ' Duke, owned by
Wayne Horner of Brucefield
had a third for driver Dennis
Jewitt in'the eighth.
Saturday afternoon at
London, Bill Caldwell was
third, with Major Decision for
owner Lorne Dale of Clinton.
Harold Gibbings finished fifth
with Harlo Champ which he
co-owns with Ernest Brown.
Randy McLean was fourth
behind Jason Direct who he
has in partnership with Mike
Rosen of Montreal.
The' track in London was
not in very good condition for
racing on Saturday. It was
extremely sloppy and the
water didn't drain off nearly
as well as it does on our
Clinton track.
Chocolate Duke, owned by
Ken Parke of Zurich and John
H. Lester of Forest was
second in a 2:05.3 mile at
Mohawk on Saturday night.
The Mohawk Autumn
Trotting Classic for a purse of
$61,500 was the feature event
of the evening on Sunday at
Mohawk Raceway. Ima Jula,
owned by Duncan MacDonald
of Sidney, Nova Scotia w.as
the winner with Joe O'Brien
on the bike. William
Houghton finished second
with Keystone Pioneer. These
first two are both mares by
Hickory Pride.
Neil McRann was third
with his. Dart Can p. He now
has 10 wins, 11 seconds and
seven thirds from 34 starts, a
record of 2:00.1 and 1977
earnings of $105,479.
Jerry Duford was fourth
• with Athlone Boy. Terry Kerr
inished fifth with Dapper
'r Dillon for owners Doreen
Rowcliffe of Hensall and
Barry Elliott of Kitchener.
Dapper Dillon has started 29
times with 13 wins, four
seconds and three thirds,
which gives him earnings for
the year of $105,640, and a
record of 2:00.2.
Ima Lula led all the way
with fractions for the mile of
`30.1 -1 :02.4 - 1:32 - 2:01.3.
Shalako N., owned by Bill
Flemning of Clinton, was
third with trainer -driver Tom
Strauss in a 2:02.3 mile. The
Ne -year-old gelding has a
standing of six wins, one
second and four thirds from
18 starts with 1977 earnings of
$13,684 plus a pacing record of
2:01.3.
At London on Monday.
night, Pebbies Girl was '
fourth in the second race. She
is co -owned by George
Feagan and her driver Gerry
Roebuck of Goderich was
second with Randy Henry up
for Walter and Robert Daer of
Goderich.
Dennis Jewitt gave R. H.
Arnie a new lifetime record
of 2:06.3. in the seventh. This
was the sixth win this year for
the four-year-old gelding by
Tarport Arnie - Gladys Girl.
He is trained at Clinton by
Walter Oster for Helen and
Ron Swartz of Lucan,
Joe McDaid was third with
his Rossland Abbe, while
John Muir finished fourth
behind Goldie Chris for
owners Norm Derrin and
Harry Beaver.
Charles Brindley , of
Goderich is the new owner of
Melo Victory. He purchased
the two-year-old colt by
Tarport Arnie - Belmont
Kelly from Fred, Harold and
Norman Jewell of Goderich.

first rung in the ladder
towards the Canadian Figure
Skating Competition — in
other words, the big one.

rode his 135 Zukuki to a third
place finish in the 25 lap
feature race in the Buffy's
Moto, at Hully Gully on
Sunday.
Dave McGregor of Toronto
'and Wayne Ryerson of
Simcoe both on Suzukies beat
Van Oss in the one hour 'en-
durance race. Other local
riders placing well were'Scott
MacGregor of Kippen, who
ran 7th in -the 250 class; and
13 -year-old Chuck; Collins of
Varna who captured 10th in
the 25 lap endurance race.

Debbie's Buddies have 10
points while ' the Bowling
Bums and the Chicken Coop's
are tied in second with 7
points apiece. The Bobcats
finish off the scoring with 4
points to put them in last
place.
Deb Cook held the best
score for the ladies high
single with 261 points. Nancy
Falconer had the high triple
with 562 points and Jackie
Zwaan had 178 points for the
high average.
' In the men's division Gary
Armstrong had the high
single with 282 points and the
high triple with 656. George
Collins had 214 points to
capture the high average.
