Clinton News-Record, 1977-06-30, Page 90 4 00 Varna boy does well at fair by Mary Chessell Congratulations to Scott Consitt, whose 4-H calf was runner-up grand champion at Hensall Fair. Congratulations also to Dale Stephenson who was runner-up at Huron Cen- tennial School for best all round boy, and to Lawrence ,Keys and Michael Coleman, who tied for top academic boy at Huron Centennial School. They each had 10 A's and 2 B's. Michael also gave the valedictory address. A banquet was held on Thursday evening for the graduating students and their parents. Wilfred Chuter had returned from an enjoyable three-week holiday in England and Scotland. Some interesting places he visited glr i" on the bus tour were London, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and Stratford -on -Avon. Mrs: Mack Hunt is home after spending some time in Huntsville at her sister's home. She says the tent caterpillars were so bad there that sections of the bush were stripped of foliage,, and driving over them on the road was like driving in slush. Mrs. Florence Elliott has returned from Aurora, where she spent the past month caring for her granddaughter Erin. Mr. and Mrs. Hank Broeze had a marvellous holiday in the Netherlands returning home on Sunday. Shower A bridal shower was held for Bonnie Stirling on Friday evening in the Sunday School rooms. A very funny mock wedding was performed by several of the ladies, and musical numbers were given by Bonnie and Brenda Dowson and Tanis Chuter, ac- companied by Bonnie on the ukelele. An address of good wishes was read by Mrs. Carol Moore, and Bonnie received many lovely gifts. A delicious lunch vias served by the hostesses, neighbours of the Stirlings. LOL church service The South Huron District Orange Lodges held their annual church parade to Varna United Church on Sunday. Flag bearers were George Clarke of Bayfield and David Roy of Varna. They were members of the White Knights, Explorers and Happy Hour. This group !of boys and girls aged 8 to 11 years 'of age also visited 'the Huron Couftty Museum. The cool waters of Goderich Harbour soon invited tired feet. After a lunch period at the Park on the waterfront the boys and girls enjoyed the beach for several hours. It was a really fine outing. Those who gave leadership for the event were Mrs. Myra Lovell, Mrs. Ann • Walters, Mrs. Eileen Townsend, Mrs. Barbara Moffatt, Rev. E. S. Stephens and our jovial and helpful bus driver, Mr. Edison McLean. This was the last outing for the groups until the 'fall season when activities will resume. Back to back race: girls, Nancy Taylor and Sandrat Faber; boys, Scott Cboper and Bill Kinsman; 13 and over, Ron Taylor and David Consitt. Joan Grunewald and Ross McBeath won the egg throwing contest while Anne and Bob Walters won the needle threading contest with Barb and David Cooper coming in second. In running the races, Joan Grunewald and Jean Rath - well came first and second in the' ladiest division while Jim Consitt and Arnold Taylor came first and second in the men's division. A question game conducted by Helen and Ken Faber was enjoyed by all. The Brucefield and Kippen Churches met for an outdoor service at Hully Gully on Sunday, June 19. The service was under the leadership of Rev. E. S. Stephenson. Special music was provided by the Kippen Junior Choir under the direction of Mrs. Mary Moffat and the Brucefield Choir under the leadership of Mrs. Barbara Livermore. After a smorgasbord luncheon a program followed. News of Hensall by Bertha McGrego•• Mrs. Bertha MacGregor returned home after at- tending the Ontario Rebekah Assembly held at the Royal York in Toronto. Mrs. Walter Spencer, who has been receiving treatment in St. Joseph's Hospital, London returned,to her.home on Friday: Mrs.. James Sangster, who has been a patient in South Huron Hospital Exeter, returned to her home on Saturday. Miss Dorothy Farquhar of. Toronto is spending this week with her mother, Mrs. Emma, Farquhar. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hopper and family were recent visitors with the latter's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Campbell. Mr. Gregg Spencer of Bancroft visited with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Spencer. Celebrate fortieth anniversary Miss Sylvia Merner, Hensall Was hostess at her home on Wednesday evening for het parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard M,erner, Zurich, who were celebrating their 40th 'Wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Merner, Stephen and Julia. were present for the family dinner. Following the dinner, a number of relatives and friends assembled and :Air - prised the guests of honour. Mr. Peter McNaughton, who recently underwent surgery in St. Joseph's Hospital, London was tran- sferred to South . Huron Hospital, Exeter last week for convalescence. Area grad Sharon Brodie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Brodie, Brucefield, graduated from Fanshawe College School of Nursing, Woodstock Campus, on June 30, 1977. She is also a graduate of Central Huron Secondary School. On completion of her R.N. exams, Sharon will take up duties at Saginaw Hospital, Saginaw, Michigan.
