Varna men
beat Lions
The Varna Men's Slowpitch
Team won a `close game
against Bayfield Lions by a
score of 22 to 18 at Varna on
Saturday night.
This ,weekend the Bayfield
Lions are sponsoring league
tournament with two games
at Varna Park on Friday
night- Pine Lake vs. Bayfield
Lions at 7 p.m. and Paul
Bunyon vs. Varna at 9.
If Varna loses their game,
they will play on Saturday at
Paul Runyon at 1 p.m. and if
they win, they will play at
Bayfield at 2 p.m.
Tournament winners will
be decided at games in
Bayfield at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
on Saturday. •
Spring League bowling
The Spring League saw its
final week of play and
Bruce's Bowlers managed to
maintain the top position with
50 points. They were closely
followed however, by the
Downs and Ups who had 491/2
points.
The Forget-Me-Nots • were
.not far behind with 431/2 and
the Untouchables made the
race close with 43 points. The
Do or Dies remained in the
league with 421/2 points while'
the Corner Pins kept the
match close with 411/2 points.
In the Ladies' Division
Marie Collins held 318 points
to take the ladies high single
and 744 points for the high
triple. Rosemary Armstrong
captured the high average
with 202 points.
Joe Atkinson had 280 points
to take the men's high single
and 'Bruce Collins took the
high triple with 666 and the
.high average with 211 points.

grounded out, Don Bartliff
walked. Paul Bartliff then
followed with a three run
homer to right field to give
the Colts a'3-1 lead.
1 The Colts added to their
lead in the seventh when Don
MacDonald doubled with one
out. Stew Mustard followed
with a single to score
MacDonald.
In the Tigers' half ,of the
seventh, they cut the lead to 4-
3 when Parsons hit a two run
homer after Rick Schilbe had
singled.
The Colts scored their final
run in the ninth inning when
Butch Fleet was the "hitting
star in a winning way for the
Colts as,,he went four for four
at the plate. Stew Mustard
chipped. in with three hits for
five appearances at the plate.
With the weekend split with
the Tigers, the season's
record against each other
now stands at three wins and
one loss in favour of the Colts.

Last_ Sunday afternoon, the
Clinton Colts' winning streak
of 12 games came to an end at
Dashwood when th'et_ Dash-
wood Tigers beat the Colts 4 -
distance in striking out five
and allowing only seven hits.
He also contributed three
singles in four trips at bat.
Dan Colquhoun singled twice
while Don MacDonald, Dave
Fawcett and N Paul Bartliff
added one hit each.
Before Sutiiday's action. the
Colts had defeated ..this same
Dashwood team last Friday
e' ening at Dashwood by a
close score of .5-3. Don
MacDonald outdueled. Peter
Stover on the hill in a
close,well-played game.
In gaining the vistory,
MacDonald racked up six
strike outs and allowed but
eight hits.
Dashwood opened the
scoring with a run in the
fourth inning. With two out,
O'Rourke singles, advanced
to second base on a passed
ball and scored when
Nicholson misplayed a fly
',ball.
The Colts „bounced back in
the sixth inning with three
runs. Stew Mustard led off
with a single and Cal

1-0 lead in the second inning
on three singles by Dave
Fawcett, Mark Nicholson and
Paul Bartliff. The Tigers
roared back with three runs
in the bottom of the fourth.
Jim Guenther walked,' Jim
Besterd and Joe O'Rourke
singled to load the bases with
one out. After Jerry Dietrich
grounded out, Steve Thurman
unloaded a three run double.
Guenther held" the Colts
scoreless the rest of the way
as he scattered eight hits.
Meanwhile, Dashwood scored
another run in the seventh off
Nicholson, on a double by
Thurman and a suicide bunt
by Dave Parsons.

strong game for the Colts in a

Local bowlers'win big
Walkerton tourney
A bowling team from
Clinton received their prizes
last week after they scored an
upset in the 21st annual -Five -
Pin Invitational Tournament
held in Walkerton recently.
The Clinton team.defeated
127other men's teams in the
tourney, which featured
prizes totalling $3,650.
The Clinton team, com-
posed of Ken Johnston, Gary
Black, and Bill Strong, all of
Clinton, Eric Matzold and Art.
Finlayson of Harperhey, and
Roger Bennewies of London,
had a total pin fall of 4297,
beating Milton -by only three
pins.
Art Finlayson' of the Clinton
team, also had a 340 single,
placing fifth in that class.
The Clinton team has been
attending the tournament for
many years, but have never
won before. •
Each team member

Dapper Dillon took a new
record of 2:00.4 at Mohawk
Raceway on June 21. He was
driven by his trainer Terry
Kerr for owners Doreen
Rowcliffe of Hensall and
Barry Elliott of Kitchener.
The speedy six-year-old
trotter by Dapper Hill - Ann
Key, also broke the track
record for trotters of 2:01.1
which was held by Keystone
Pioneer of the Bill Houghton
Stable. Dapper Dillon now
has earnings of $67,912 in 1977
and a lifetime total of
$104,682.
He is the second trotter
from George F. Elliott's good
broodmare Ann Key to earn
over $100,000. Dillon Song was
second at London on Friday
night. He now has $4,425 this
year and lifetime $158,246.
G. G. Greentree, a three-
year-old colt by Greentree

LeBeau of Brucefield and
Barry Miller of Kirkton was
driven to a new record at
Mohawk on Saturday night by

Granny Mathers was second
for the Broken M Stables of
Goderich with Ray Mathers
up. Dennis Jewitt drove
