• Colts nip Petrolia twice
By Bob Livermore
Last Sunday afternoon the
Clinton Colts travelled to
Petrolia to take on the
Raiders for an exhibition
doubleheader. The Colts
swept the both ends of the
seven inning games, 5-4 and 3-
2.
In the first game Steve
Switzer allowed the Raiders
four runs on nine hits to gain
his second win of the season.
Switzer also contributed to
his own cause with three
singles at the plate.
The Colts took a 1-0 lead in
the first inning on a lead-off
single by Don MacDonald, a
walk to Dan Colquhoun and a
single by Cam MacDonald.
Petrolia tied the game 1-1 in
the bottom of the first inning.
Petrolia took the lead 3-1 with
two runs in the third inning on
back to back homers by
Bruce Gray and John
McLean.
The Colts rallied to tie the
score 3-3 in the fifth when
Cam MacDonald tripled to
left centre to start the fifth.
Cal Fremlin singled
MacDonald home. Paul
Bartliff sacrificed Fremlin to
second, and Butch Fleet
singled Fremlin home with
the tying run.
The Colts tallied twice in
the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
Switzer' singled, Don
MacDonald singled after
Colquhniit.nl sacrificed both
runners, and Fremlin
doubled home the two runs.
Petrolia nudged closer to 5-
4 by adding a run in the
bottom half of the sixth in-
ning, but Switzer held off the
Raiders in the seventh to
preserve the Colt victory.
In the second game of the
doubleheader the Colts, with
a pitcher on loan from
Petrolia, beat the Raiders 3-2.
Due to the fact that the Colts
were missing star 'pitcher
Mark Nicholson and relief
starter Don Bartliff, they
borrowed a pitcher from
Petrolia for the exhibition
game.
The Colts opened the
scoring in the second game
with a run in the third inning.
With one out, Don MacDonald
was hit by the pitch. He raced
all the way home on a double
to left -centre by Colquhoun.
Petrolia scored two runs in
the bottom of the third to take
a 2-1 lead. Three walks and a
double by Don c Lean
produced the two ru s.
In the fourth inn g, the
Colts tied the game at 2-2.
Greg Butler, after reaching
first on an error, raced all the
way home on a double by Bob
Livermore to centre field.
The Colts won the game in
the fifth on a double by Cam
MacDonald and a .triple by
Fremlin to right -centre field.
The Colts out hit the Raiders
eight to six in the contest.
Livermore, Colquhoun and
Fremlin led the Colts with
two hits each. Don
MacDonald and Cam
MacDonald added one hit
each.
The double victory ex-
tended the Colts winning to
nine straight games without a
loss.

The Clinton Soccer Club
went down to defeat by a 3-1
score, at the hands of
Oakridge United in a Second
Division League game here
on Saturday.
Once again, Clinton
disappointed with a mediocre
display of soccer and lack of
incentive. The individual
talent was there, but seemed
unable to get together as a
team.
While the Clinton forwards
found it nearly impossible to
penetrate the solid Oakridge
defence, our defence became
panic stricken every time the
Speedy Oakridge forwards
burst through the middle and
advanced on Juergen
Hellman in goal.
Hellman was given lots of
work and did well to keep the
score down to three goals.
Pete Wise scored the lone
Clinton goal when he was
"Johnny ion the spot" for a
long cross from Colquhoun
which Pete caught on the
volley and deflected past a
helpless'keeper.
As time ran out for Clinton,
play became ragged and
chippy and once again
several players were warned
for "ungentlemanly con-
duct".
This behaviour does
nothing to enhance Clinton's
reputation in the league,
which up to now has been
exemplary.
This writer would like .to
see a return to the sport-
smanlike play we have
become accustomed to.
With practice, this Clinton
team will become a force to
be reckoned with but not if
half the key players are
sitting on the bench under
suspension. So cool it, boys!
Clinton plays away this
weekend at London Por-
, tuguese on Saturday. Kick-off
time is 4 p,m. ,
Fleming Stallions stumped again
Once again the Fleming
Stallions could not overcome
St. Columban and dropped
another game 4-1.
It was a close contest for
the first half of the game with
the St. Columban boys taking
the edge in the scoring 2-1.
Tony Gibbings scored the
Clinton goal.
The set;ond half was all
Clinton hemming the St.
Columban players in their
own half, Charlie Wise failed
to tie the score when he
missed a penalty shot by
firing the ball straight at the
opposing goaltender.
St. Columban then got two
breakaway goals to make the
final score 4-1.
Tony Gibbings and Brad
Forbes were the two Stallion
stars while Paul Stephensen
in net regained some of his
form from last year.
The Stallions failure to put
the ball in the net lost the
game as they had far more of
the play.
The next game is on
Wednesday, June 22, against
a much improved Bayfield
team. Sunday, June 26 they
travel to Guildwood to play a
Toronto team in the first
round of the Ontario Cup.
The boys• will have tohave
their_scoring boots on as there
is no second chance if they
want to make it to the second
round.
