Clinton News-Record, 1977-06-23, Page 2t4 PAGE 2--CLINTON NEWSTRECORD, THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 197' "If wrinkles must be written upon our brow, let them not be written upon the heart. The spirit should not grow old." That quotation by James A. Garfield was picked especially ; because the provincial government has designated this Senior Citizens Week. Don't fall into the trap of. thinking of all Senior Citizens as some aged species rocking away their declining years on a porch. Certainly not in our community. Here they are a vigorous, enthusiastic portion of our population - whether living in one of the two apartment buildings or maintaining their own ac- commodation. The Golden Radars are a very active group who meet regularly in the Town Hall and the newly • formed Trillium Club at King Street Villa is off and -running with a quilting project. Many others work individually alongside us all in voluntary efforts in the community. There's one lady, I do not know how many years "young" she is, but how I admire the way she can step out for a long walk in fair or foul weather. Whenever I see her, small of stature but bright and determined, I think of one word "in- domitable". Hats off to all of our Senior Citizens - we need them. 3' oto ..• +•1q.TOT Zer .'dam `t, • 'kP!+ 'j' Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Web- ster and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Webster of Big Valley, Alberta, are visiting with the families of Wat and Melvin Webster of Clinton this week. + + + Mr. and Mrs. John Keith of Mount Forest celebrated their 60th wedding an- niversary at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Norman McDougall, James Street, Clinton, on Sunday, June 19. We do not often have communications from the United States Navy - but last week received the following press release which is of particular interest to our town: "Commander Walter Jay Wylie, United States Navy, took command of the Anti - Submarine Warfare Frigate USS GLOVER on June 3rd at a change of command ceremony held aboard the ship at Norfolk Naval base. The Glover is manned by 17 officers and a crew of 225. "Commander Wylie is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy as well as the Naval postgraduate school. The countywide theme for thjs summer's program is `Be a Super Snooper' at your library. The idea is that mysteries, both real and fictitious are all able to be solved through books. Children are, asked to register as "detectives" in the Children's Department between June 27 and July 2. Registered detectives will be given detectives' logs for recording those mysteries they have solved (books read) during the eight-week program. The County Library will also be providing de- coder book marks carrying out the mystery solving theme, and 'Super Snooper' certificates for those suc- cessfully completing the program. The purpose of the registration is to allow for the extended to several of . the musically talented residents at Huronview, but a busy schedule for Senior Citizens Week made it ph tsically impossible for the group to accept. However, • the Bradley group 'will ably fill the bill with Eugene (who in- cidentally is the church organist) accompanying his seven children, on the ac- cordion. For those who are not° aware of the picnic location, signs will be posted from the church. Your Florida Island awaits hotel you! So, come on kids and join in on the summer fun at the library. Be A Super Snooper!' — by Marian Doucette From up here by Shelley McPhee I sit in my office and look at my recently repaired watch to see that it's suffering from the same damages ,again. A letter from MacLean -Hunter sits on my desk with a fifth notice of a subscription payment and a threat to cancel it, despite the fact that I did indeed pay for the magazine on the first notice. My new plc pen refuses to write and my new plant refuses to grow. Was I born under a black star? Am I -a hard -luck girl? Am I paranoid? All ofthe above may be true, but this does not explain why these mistakes, breakdowns and miscalculations occur. I suppose I am part of a dying breed: those who want to do things right, to clothe best we can, to create newer and better ways. Yet we are undone every day by the apathetic people of the world, the ones who aim at mediocracy - and succeed. Some may think that it's unfair that presidents of countries (or companies), movie stars, heirs to fortunes, great inventors, best-seller authors and athletes receive the highest recognitions for their work, while everyday functions can go unnoticed and neglected. Granted there are no gold medals for good telephone maintenance or elevator operation. There is no shining star for those who make the mail delivery on time or for the waitresses who are courteous at the coffee shop, yet you'd think that people would see it as a personal ac- complishment to put all of /heir efforts into their work. Like the scientist who must work accurately and carefully to discover the cure for cancer, the television repair man should have the same obligations. It is his duty and his position to give all of his efforts to the task of repairing the unstable vertical hold. Perhaps some people receive Measure out of the fact that they've done a lousy job. Surely the same efforts that go into being surly and indifferent or doing things wrong, can be channelled into doing them right. In. any line of work there are rewards, promotions, bonuses, salary raises, compliments from others - yes, there are some of us who still appreciate and recognize a job well done, no matter how small or how low on the status scale. But then, size should really have nothing to do with the effort put into the building of a rocket or the repairing of a watch, because every job matters to somebody. )144 CANADA WEEK PROCLAMATION To honour Canada, our land created by the fusion of two founding cultures, enriched by the contribution of many other cultures, fatherland of all Canadians; To honour this country, home of over 22,000,000 people, proud of their heritage and the freedom they enjoy; To honour this land of peace and prosperity, this promised land of untold resources; To honour this country which is ours, of which we all are proud, I hereby proclaim the week of June 25th to July 1st "CANADA WEEK". Thus, I invite the citizens of Clinton to celebrate it by striving to know our country better, by flying our flag, by par- ticipating in CANADA WEEK and by promoting Canadian unity. I notified this firm that I was moving and gave them my new mailing address, and now all I've got since coming here are bills! Believe it or not, but the head office of this company in the United States, tell us that it's easier to send the magazines than to stop the bills. We're still scratching our head about this one...anyway they are going to mail you on the magazines you missed at NO CHARGE and they advise, "just disregard the bills in your possession," and they ■ will start mailing your new magazines from scratch. Perishable products are coded to supposedly avoid this, so I think twice is too often! I have not confronted the store manager fora refund because it will not solve the problem. My husband suggests that the company may be combining old milk with the new so there won't be as great a loss to them . Can IMPACT give me an address for the milk marketing board as I want to report this to them?
