Diamonds
are
always right
The tradition of,the white diamond
as the symbol of engagement is 500
,'years old this year. The first
engagement ring was given in 1477
when Maximilian of Austria asked
Mary of Burgundy to be his bride.
. Maximilian was a little shy about
popping the question, so he consulted
with an advisor' who told him : "Your
•Grace must have a ring set with a•
diamond." Maximilian did give Mary
a,
a sparkling white diamond, and a
tradition was started which has
continued through the ages.
Actually, the diamond has been
associated with romance since early
Greek times. In fact, the very word
diamond comes from the Greek
"adamas," meaning unconquerable.
The Greeks -believed that the fire in a
white diamond reflected the constant
flame of love.
Games make big
splash in pools
Making a big splash with home
swimming pool -owning families this
year will be a wider -than -ever range
of games based on long -popular `dry'
pastimes.
The increasing popularity of home
• pools several years ago prompted
games and toys, manufacturers to
adapt such things as football,
baseball,, volleyball, jai alai, hor-
seshoes, marbles and checkers to
meet the needs of waterborne kids
end adults.
` The never-ending assortment of
such in -pool games has more recently
prompted the National Swimming
Pool Institute to advise potential pool
owners to investigate the available
games at the same time they are
deciding what size and shape of pool
they want.
Also an important consideration,
suggests an official of the local NSPI
chapter, is the amount of room that
will be needed for poolside games
such as shuffleboard or badminton.
"Plan your pool as part of a com-
plete outdoor recreation center to be
enjoyed by both children and adults,"
he says.
