(News -Record photo) Well-KnownMcKillop couple celebrate Many people who have lived a long time will tell you life was much better when they were young. But Edna and Russell Bolton of McKillop Township, who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 13, are exceptions. Both have seen many changes in the years since they were married at the McKillop United Church manse in 1927 and most were for the better they feel. "I think things are better today," Mr. Bolton said. "Work is done by machine instead of hard hand labour and young people today have a better chance to get an education than we had." Mr. and Mrs. Bolton are both natives of McKillop Township and have farmed near Winthrop since they were first married. They have two sons - Arthur and Malcolm. Jakilegfir 50th Anniversary Arthur is now farming on the "home farm" and his brother is the agriculture representative, for Bruce County and lives in Walkerton. When the Boltons started farming 100 acres was the standard farm and virtually all the work was done with horses. "There were a lot more people in the area then and you depended on your neigh- bour a lot more," Mr. Bolton said. Mrs. Bolton clearly remembers the large threshing gangs of 14 or 15 men who would move in the night before they started work. "The meals they ate weren't light meals and you couldn't run to the corner store," she said. "The pace was fast enough then, but it was different. There wasn't as much tension." Fireman "I'he depression hit not long after they were married. "They were hard times. There was no money to do anything and then the war came and there was money to do everything," Mr. Bolton said. "The depression made us take care of the pennies. It made us pretty close with money for the rest of our life." Despite the technological changes which make it possible to travel to town in 10 minutes instead of an hour and a half, some things haven't changed. 11 they could have planned the weather, the Clinton firemen would have had some sunshine for their picnic on Sunday, June 12." However, in spite of an overcast sky there was no rain and the firemen, wives and children enjoyed an afternoon of fun .rod games at the Bayfield River Conservation Park. Highlight of the adult ac- tivities was a tug of war between the men. The team of Craig Cox, Doug Cantelon, Harvey Carter, Mark Jenkins, Jack Carter, Randy Glew, Dennis Flkeischauer and Clarence Neilans had just about proven their superior strength when the "other guys", composed of Fred Lobb, Al Finch, Bruce Schoenhals, Paul Draper, Doug Cartwright, Jack Peck, Ross Jewitt, Dean Reid and Gerry Cox gave a mighty heave-ho and brought the former to their kneos. 13ut in all fairness it must he admitted they were aided and abetted a teeny bit by a couple of the fair sex. The moral behind this story is never to underestimate the power of a woman or several have a picnic women Prior to the tug of war the children participated in a number of races and contests. W inners were: Two years and under running race, Debbie Draper, Marci Shoenhals, Kerry Cox; five and six race, Scott Glew, Lorie Jewitt, Jason Cox, Brenda Finch, Ricky Lobb; throw a ball, Lurie J ewitt was the only one to score; seven and eight throw a ball, Cam Finch;' Vicki Peck, Jackie Draper and ,Katie Carter; seven and eight three legged race, Julie Carter and Cam Finch and Jackie Draper and Vicki Peck ; nine and ten running, girls Rhonda Lobb, Sandra Cantelon, boys.
