Clinton News-Record, 1977-06-16, Page 9Browniesreceive awards
Wednesday evening June 8,
the Brownies and their
leaders, mothers and
grandmothers and guests met
at 6 p.m. at the Sandpiper Inn
and sat down to dinner in a
body.
Following the meal
together they retired to their
meeting place, the Parish
Hall in Bayfield where they
► were treated to a variety
program and watched as the
young lades received many
awards, stars and badges.
Eighteen little girls
received a Brownie Book
Mark for missing only one
meeting during the Brownie
year. Those included Lisa
Telford, Debbie Siertsema,
Julie Boyce, Colleen Cluff,
Tanya Gril1„Lnayer, Melanie
Van Patter, Ann Bornath,
Luanne Erickson, Julie
Porter, Leigh Ann Taman,
Lisa Taman, Mary Ellen Van
Aaken, Peggy Van Won-
deran. Jayne Sturgeon, Kelly
Knights, Julia Ritchie,
Allison Dunn and Gayle
Dunn.
The four girls who had been
Sixers for the past season,
• Debbie Siertsema, Darlene
Smith, Barbara Hutchings
and Lisa Telford each
received a gift.
A program followed with
piano solos by Luanne
Erickson, Julia Ritchie and
Kim Talbot. A duet was sung
by Julie Porter and Mary
Ellen Van Aaken, and two
hilarious skits were per-
formed by the Golden Hand
Brownies; one depicting
scenes of women applying as
leaders for a Brownie Pack,
and the other an L.A: meeting
with girls "imitating" their
mothers, even to the news
correspondent. The Golden
Bar brownies then favoured
i with two songs, "the Brownie
Smile Song" and
"Superkalafragilisticex-
• pialadoshis".
Jayne Sturgeon and Bar-
bara Hutchings then put on a
puppet show and the audience
passed them on their pup-
peteer badge with great
enthusiasm. Gayle Dunn and
Roxann Martin then sang two
o, 4 songs, accompanied on the
piano by Roxann's mother.
All the actresses performed
admirably.
Brown Owl, Carol Penhale
along with assistants Tawny
Owl Charlene Porter and
Fluffy Owl Bonnie . Makins
assisted Brown Owl in
enrolling Kim Talbot as a
Brownie and also with the
Flying • Owl Ceremony of
Barbara Hutchings, Lisa
Telford, Darlene Smith,
O Jayne Sturgeon and Debbie
Siertsema. Courtesies were
given by Lisa Taman to the
L.A. president Mrs. Jean
Dunn and to Mrs. Lena
Ervine by Christine Westlake
to earn for them their
Courtesy Badges.
The leaders then presented
many badges and Service
stars; Craft Badge to Peggy
# Van Wonderan; aeadworkers

The program ended on
somewhat of a sad note when
president of the L.A. Mrs.
Jean Dunn presented Brown
Owl Carol Penhale with a
small gift as a remembrance,
as she is retiring from her
position as leader of the
Brownies. It is understood
however that some women
have volunteered to work
with the Brownies next year
and Charlene Porter is also
staying on, for which the
mothers are very thankful,

Cat Stevens is safe
"Cat Stevens is safely home
in her own abode in Bayfield.
While holidaying in
Michigan, Victoria Day
weekend, Cat became lost.
Her family hunted and
hunted, called and called,
through the bush and around
the trailer park, until they
were exhausted, and no sign
of Cat. The family finally had
to leave for home, not
knowing whether she had
been stolen or was lost in the
bush.
Before leaving camp they
had alerted everyone in
Crazyhorse Campground and
had given the phone nun-ibers
to the manager there. The
following Sunday Cat's
family droven to Michigan
and again searched and
combed the Campgrounds.
Still no sign of Cat Stevens.
Once again all returned home
sick at -heart, thinking they
would never see Cat again;
but lo and behold, the
telephone rang Monday night
- must be someone with some
news for the Bugle and no; it
was the manageress of
Crazyhorse Campgrounds,
Betty Fadell, in Michigan;
"Cat Stevens had been found
and was safe and sound in
their home."
Needless to say, the family
of Cat Stevens were so ex-
cited they could hardly
contain themselves until they
had motored td Michigan to
retrieve their pet. She is now
resting comfortably on .the
back of the couch in the
livingroom and has kept
fairly close to her family
since arriving home.
• We think she is happy to be
home and the Erickson
family are just as happy to
have her home again.
