Mets fall to Colts fury
By Bob Livermore
On Sunday afternoon the
Clinton Colts erupted again.
This time they took it to the
expense of the Crediton Mets
as they blasted them 18-2.
Steve "Twib" Switzer
gained his first pitching
victory as a Colt, pitching a
very strong game in allowing
the Mets only five hits. On the
other hand, his Colt team
mates pounded out a total of
20 hits. Leading the .team
were Paul Bartliff and Dan
Colquhoun with five hits each.
Paul hit a homer and four
singles while Dan had a
triple, doubles and two
singles.
The Colts ran their un-
beaten streak to five games
with this victory. It was no
contest as the Colts scored
three in the first two in the
second, one in the fourth,
seven in the sixth, four in the
eighth and one more run in
the ninth. The only runs the
Mets could muster off Switzer
came in the third inning.
Other hits gathered by Colt
batters came from Don
MacDonald with a triple and
single; Doc Miller, a homer
and single; Larry Pickett,
two singles and one hit each
by Don Bartliff, Steve Switzer
and Mark Nicholson.

Marlboro's star and Tulsa
Oiler player, Jack Chipchase,
coaches the young Met's
team from Crediton. Even
though most of the Mets are
inexperienced in senior ball,
they still have a good looking
team.
The same two teams met
last night, Wednesday, at
Clinton. This coming Sunday,
June 19, the Colts are trying
to schedule an exhibition
game against the Petrolia°
Raiders. Check the posters
around town for time and
date and follow the Colts at
home and away.
Soccer Club ties United
BY ROSEMARY
ARMSTRONG
Clinton Soccer Club and
Goderich United played to a
1-1 tie in their Second Division
League game at the weekend,
here in Clinton.
With a full compliment of
players dressed Clinton had
no excuses and needed none
as they played their best
game thus far with everyone
giving 100 per cent effort.The
one disappointment in this
important game was inef-
fectual refereeing which
allowed the play to become
chippy and Clinton suffered
most when Dart Colquhoun
was ordered off for what
seemed a minor infraction in
fact he was defending himself
against the ,Goderich half
back - but unfortunately, the
referee chose to see only
Colquhoun commit an in-
fraction, and a very minor
one which certainly did not
warrant immediate expulsion
from the game.
This incident appeared to
upset the Clinton game plan
and Goderich was allowed to
take control up to half time. ,
Juergen Hellman, in goal
for Clinton had a great game
making several unbelievable,
(to Goderich), saves and
keeping their forwards
scoreless, until 15 minutes
before half time when a free
kick was awarded to
Goderich just outside Clin-
ton's 18 yard line.
The ball went to Brian Allen
lying deep in Clinton's goal
mouthand from only 10 feet
out, Allen made no mistake
belting a hard drive past a
'helpless Hellman.
The score remained at 1-0
for Goderich until well into
the second half with both
-teams having several good
tries but Hellman and Carl
Moller for Goderich were
equal to anything coming
their way.
The game continued to
suffer from poor officiating
and once.again Clinton had
players warned while the
offending Goderich players
seemed to be immune.
Clinton kept on the attack
and finally ten minutes from
the end perseverance paid
off.
Grant Clark crossed a
lovely ball to Brian
Newington lying in an almost
identical position to Allen on
Goderich's goal. "Smiley"
used his head to deflect the
shot into the back of the net
giving Moller no chance and
tieing the game up at one goal
each.
Two minutes from full time
Clark was sent off for an
infraction but the remaining
nine men were able to hold on
and finish the game with one
point in the bag.
This week's game is
against Oakridge United on
Saturday June 18th at 6 p.,m.
at the Arena field.
