Soccer club loses first
The Clinton Soccer Club
went down fighting in London
and district Second Division
League game on the weekend
when they met Ingersoll and
lost by a score of 4-2.
Injuries had depleted the
Clinton ranks with Vic
Kennedy, Alex Harrett and
Gerry Lobb all sidelined. Bill
Cantelon was unavailable due
to work commitments.
However the Clinton team
did an admirable job but did
not get . on track until
Ingersoll had' gone three
goals up, the first goal being a
defensive blunder with Brian
Miller misjudging a pass
back to goalkeeper Juergen
Hellman, .which saw the ball
trickle over the goal line.
The second goal came from

Legion tourney
The Clinton Legion held its
annual golf tournament on
Sunday, May 15 and some 113
people turned out on the
greens for the event.
The day long occasion was
held at the Sunset Golf
Course, north of Goderich on
highway 21. A banquet
followed in the evening at the
legion.
Out of all the players, the
overall winner of the golfing
was Derick Divock of Clinton.
Brian Reeve received the
Legion Trophy. It i

and has become an important

another defensive mistake
when Hellman was penalized
for delaying the game. The
resulting shot was tipped into
the net by an unfortunate
Hellman. Ingersoll scored
again a few minutes later on a
good shot, this time by one of
their own players.
Just before halftime,
Clinton reduced the lead
when Brian Newington sent
over a great cross to op-
portunist Dan Colquhoun,
who in turn put the ball into
the back of the net.
In the second half, with
Clinton showing a lot more
poise and playing better
soccer, they were unlucky to
lose a fourth goal before
retaliating with a goal on a
penalty shot by Don Arm-
strong to make the score 4-2
for Ingersoll. A narrow miss
from Grant Clark and one
from Dan Colquhoun could
have had the game tied up as
Clinton were playing the
better soccer.
Seven minutes froth the
end, Armstrong missed with
a penalty shot awarded for
"hands" and although -it was
all Clinton to the final whistle,
the score remained 4-2 for
Ingersoll.
On Saturday May 21st,
Clinton play in the Goderich
Invitational Tournament and
on Sunday May 29th travel.to
London to play London Lions.

Pee wee kickers lose two
The Clinton Pee Wees lost
two exhibition games last
week,,3-2 decision to Goderich
in the first and a 6-2 defeat by
the Sarnia City boys in the
second.
In Goderich on Thursday
without four of their regular
starters, the Clinton boys put
up a fine fight and for most of
the game were the best team,
but its goals that count.
Charlie Wise opened the
scoring late in the first half
when he teamed up with John
Elliott. -
Billy Tugwell put Clinton
two goals up when Brad
Forbes passed early in the
second hale. Goderich came
back strong to tie the score
then went ahead with only
three minutes left to score a
third goal, which was a
protested goal, but which was
allowed to stand.
"In dropping a 6-2 decision to
Sarnia on Saturday, the
Fleming Stallions, as they
like to be called, played their
best game of the year.
The Sarnia coach com-
mented after the game that
this was the best team his
boys had played so far and
with a little luck the score
would have been in Clinton's
favour.
Sarnia had the wind ad-
vantage in the first half and
opened the scoring when Paul
Stephensen slipped, leaving
an open net for the Sarnia
forward to score into.
Charlie Wise tied the game
on a solo effort beating two
Sarnia defenders and the
goaltender by driving the ball
into the net.
Sarnia came back and were
soon in front to stay and at the
half time, the score stood at 5-
1 for Sarnia.
In the second half it was all
Clinton and some good goal
tending on the part of the
Sarnia goalie stopped them
from scoring. Charlie Wise
got the Stallions' second goal
from the penalty spot.
Sarnia got a break away
goal late in the game to put
the game out of reach for the
local boys.
The Stallions will travel to
Sarnia for a return game
some time in June.
The Huron.minor Soccer
league schedle starts next
week and Clinton will be
competing with teams from
Goderich, Seaforth, St.
Columban, Bayfield and
Grand Bend. The Stallions
are also. entered in the
Ontario Cup, the first round of
which is to be played on June
11-12.

NDP's pick DaveZyluk
A 29 year-old Kincardine
man was nominated as
ca-ndidate for the New
Democratic Party for the
riding of Huron -Bruce,
Thursday night.
Dave Zyluk, born in Dublin,
Ireland was not opposed at
the nomination meeting held
at the Tiverton Community
Centre.
Mr. Zyluk said he accepted
the nomination without
reservation. A resident in
Canada since 1967, he said he
was able to make his own
choice about which party he
backed.
"I wasn't influenced by my
parent's prejudices. In the 10
years I've lived in Canada
I've had a chance to look at
the three national parties,
objectively. I chose the NDP
in 1972. It was the correct
party, my party," he said.
Mr. Zyluk, principal of
Kingsbridge separate school,
15 miles north of Goderich, is
a Kincardine resident and a
member of the town's
recreation board. He was
asked to run as a candidate
last Thursday, May 5.
He said that if he is elected
he would be representing the
Conservatives and Liberals
as well. Mr. Zyluk believes
that Murray Gaunt, Liberal
MPP for Huron -Bruce for the
last 15 years is a good man
and would help anyone.
"Mr. Gaunt is good for the
people he represents, but his
party is not good for the
province," he said.
Mr. Zyluk will be running
against Murray Gaunt and
Progressive Conservative
Sam MacGregor, a Kin-
cardine area developer.
One of Mr. Zyluk's issues is
the closing of hospitals.
"Goderich Psychiatric
hospital was closed against
public outcry. That shows a
lack of responsibility in
government. The Con-
servatives say they're in-
terested in the health of the
people. If they close
hospitals, they're not," he
said.
"Mr. MacGregor says we'll
have a Conservative
government. Well, we have
w
an excellent chance to have
an NDP government if people
listen to issues and not to the
back biting that i,ing on,"
M. Zyluk said!
Walter Miller, past vice-
president of the National
Farmers' Union andU a
member of the NDP since it
was founded, was guest •
speaker.
He said unemployment' is
the number one problem
facing the province today"
and it's impossible for me to
talk about unemployment and
not relate it to - the farm
scene.".
Mr. Miller said in his riding •
you -could find thousands of
farmers so economically
depressed they have to go to
town and take jobs workers
need in order to subsidize
their farms.
"Consequently the farm
doesn't produce, the farmer
can't hire and isn't con-
suming much."
"The first thing is to get our
values straight and recognize
the basis of the economy
which is agriculture," he
said.
