30. In memoriam
RATH - In loving memory of a
dear husband and father, Grant,
who passed away one year ago
May 9, 1976:
One sad and lonely year has
passed since the great sorrow fell
The shock that we received that
day, no one can ever tell
Your end came sad and sudden,
no time to say goodbye."
You were gone before we knew it,
only God knows why.
A golden heart stopped beating;
two working hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove to
us, He only takes the best.
Too dearly loved to ever be
forgotten by his wife Gene,
daughter Joyce and son-in-law
Bruce. —18

Wolf shot
A CB radio call from Dale
Sterl tg sent Joe Storey his
son Jim, of RR 3, Clinton and
Bob' Sterling in pursuit of a
wolf last week.
The incident, which oc-
curred on April 27, took the
men to the Bayfield Line in
Goderich Township where a
wolf was chasing a dog owned
by Dale Sterling. When the
men arrived, the wolf was
running into the bush, but
when 'the animal was shot at,
it turned and ran towards
them. The animal had–been
frightened of the shots which
echoed in the hush,
Joe Storey fired the third
shot which killed the animal
and the brain was then sent to
Toronto for rabies tests.

County allows oil testing
County council decided
April 1)9 to permit seismic
testing for oil and gas along
county road rights -of -ways,
after hearing it may have no
right to refuse.
County Engineer Jim
Britnell told council it
probably has no choice but to
a11ow the testing, though ito
can impose conditionsti and
demand compensation for
any damages.
The tests are to -he carried
out by two companies
working for Shell Canada I..td.
They will cover the western
portion of- Huron County in
addition to parts of Mid-
dlesex, Lamhton and Bruce
Counties.
The procedure involved,
Mr. Britnell explained, is
drilling a borehole on the
shoulder of thr' rngd nnri then
inserting and exploding a
dynamite charge. Recording
equipment traces the shock
waves created by the ex-
plosion which can give clues
to locations of oil or gas
deposits. --,
However, the explosion
could also fracture municipal
or .field drains, he warned,
causing damage which might
nut show up for years.
He said he has obtained a
gua1•antee from Shell it will
cover the cost of any
damages and suggested each
num icipa1ity to be tested
obtain the same assurance.
The county can only approve
testing along its roads, he
noted. Tests along any
municipal roads must he

approved at the local level.
Questioned whether a
township could refuse per-
mission, Mr. Britnell in-
dicated Shell probably has
the right to conduct the test!s;„ _
He added he would like to see
someone refuse, to see what
would happen.
"I'd prefer they (Shell) just"
go away," he said, but added
we probably owe it to the
country, in view of the fuel
situation, to allow ex-
ploration.
"Does the county get
royalties if they strike oil?"
Goderich Township Reeve
Gerry Ginn inquired. Mr.
Britnell responded he doesn't
know who owns the mineral
rights -under road allowances,
"probably the crown".
