Election advertising now allowed in weekly papers Weekly newspapers across Ontario will benefit from a change to the Election Finances Reform Act (1975), passed April 21st in the Provincial Legislature. The "Act, in its original form, precluded the weeklies from carrying _election ad- vertising the week of the election. This meant that candidates had to present their final message to voters more than a week before -the election, and allowed no provision for last-minute election issues. Under Private Members Bill presented by Jack Johnson, MPP for Wellington-Dufferin-Peel, the Act has been amended to permit advertising ".. on the day immediately preceding polling day in a newspaper which is published in Ontario nota more frequently than once a week and whose day of By Rena Caldwell . The Kippen Corner ha5. been brightened by the ad- dition of a new paint job at McLellans and Mellis. Two new homes are being erected near the river and an Auction Sale is being held in the village May 7. regular publication falls on the day immediately preceding polling day." In other words, weeklies publishing on Wednesday are now permitted to carry election advertising the day before the Thursday polling day. The Bill, strongly sup- ported by a brief prepared by Ontario Weekly Newspapers' Association and circulated to member publishers, and to each member of the Legislature, passed without opposition. While Private Members Bills used to simply die on the floor of the Legislature, recent changes to legislature procedure allow them a full hearing. These bills are scheduled by a draw for position, and Johnson was fortunate to win an early place in the schedule.
