Clinton News-Record, 1977-05-05, Page 6PAGE 6—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, MAY 5, 1977 Seniors open soccer season By Rosemary Armstrong The soccer season is upon us once more and regular league play for Clinton in the London and District Second Division League will kick-off at St. Columban at 3 p.m. this Sunday, May 8. Clinton will host its first game of the season on Saturday, May 14 at 6 p.m. against Ingersoll Flyers. In two pre -season exhibition games, Clinton Showed lots of promise with a 1-1 tie against St. Columban and a convincing 6-2 win over London Lions. Dan Colquhoun scored the lone goal against St. Columban, while Vi,cto4r Kennedy and Bill Cantelon with two goals each, Dan Colquhoun and . Paul Galachuik counted in the Lions game. Players returning from last year are the Kennedy brothers, ay and Victor (Brian) , tan Colquhoun, - Brian Millar, Alex Harrett, Bill Cantelon, Brian (Smiley) Newington, Pete'Wise, Grant Clark, Paul Galachiuk, Derwin Carter and Don Armstrong who supposedly retired from active participation last year but has signed "for emergency use only! !" New faces on the team are impressive: namely, Juergerf Helmut, who shows remarkable agility in goal and had a splendid game Bgainst Lions; Wilmer akker who plays well at midfield, and Glen McGregor a newcomer on the forward line. Also back are former - regulars Randy Millar, who missed last year with hockey' injuries, and the stalwart Gerry L,.obb, who left the team for two years. The executive for this year is Don Armstrong (pres.) ; Pat Newington (manager, treas.-sec.) ; Don Armstrong and Victor Kennedy (coaching); Brian Newington (ticket sales); Randy Millar (mor'3le• manager); and Rosemary Armstrong (public relations, sports writer and uniform specialist). The club invites you to come out to the Community Park for their advertised games and ask you to lend your support to your soccer team, now.in its fifth year of competition. Down at the local lanes YBC Friday Afternoon The season's winners in the YBC. Friday afternoon league were the Pack Rats with 111 points. In second place stand Boussey's Baboons with 1091/2 and in third, Kazy and the Pups with 106.• Following down are the Tiger Cats with 103 points, Corries Coyotes with 96, The Bears with 92' The Lions with • 87 and Ken's Kobras with 82)/2 points. Terry Murney took the girl's high with 139 points and the high double with 267 points. Vicki Sutherland picked up the high average with 127 points. In the boys division, Scott Kay took the high single with 206 points and the high average with 182, while Jeff Corrie captured the high double with 367 points. YBC Friday Night The Fabulous Five held on to their lead- t0 become the season winners with 105 points. In the close race, the Three Strikers gained 1021/2 points for second and the Head Pins missed by one-half point to take third with 102 points. Cornish's Cool Cats followed with 100 poinjs and the 450's held 98 points. The Strikes and ,..Spares kept the scores tight with 96 points as did the Super Strikers with 93 and the Bay City Bowlers with 871/2 points. Lynn Armstrong bowled a good game to take the girls high single "with 236 points: the high double with 409 and the high average with 180 points. Tim Addison received the high single in the boys division with 206 and he also took the high double with 336 points. Phillip Cornish took the high average with 170 points. YBC Majors In the first week of playoffs Vanastra Gun club results J.im Caldwell of Kippen, Bill Thompson of Clinton and Bill Stewart. of Goderich showed perfect marksmanship on. April 26 when they shot perfect scores of 25 at the Vanastra Trap Shoot. John Anderson of Kippen and Tom Anderson of Lon- desboro followed closely behind with scores of 24 each. Lloyd Venner of Hensall, George Hamm of Blyth and Jeff Darling of Exeter held high scores of 23. Murray East of Clinton and Jim Butcher of Clinton both shot 22 birds while Jack Mills of Guelph, Bill Boussey, of Kitchener'and John Hessel of Goderich'hit 21. Eugene Clark of Exeter followed with 20, John McKishnie of Goderich shot 19, Mery Batkin of Clinton hit 18 birds, and Ashley Gilbert of Goderich had 15 points. Tom Allen was the lone shooter of 25 at the skeet shoot, held on April 30. He was followed by Ernie Marshall of Mitchell who shot 24 birds. Mery Batkin, Bill Stewart, Murray East, ,and Gerry Coleman of Clinton all shot 23, while Harrison Schock of Zurich and Bill Pincombe of Toronto shot 22. John Anderson, Ashley Gilbert and Glen Mogk of Bornholm each. hit 21. Paul* Mellar of Vanastra and Herman Fisher of Benmiller shot 19, John Hessel shot 18 and Randy Stewart, the junior shooter from Goderich hit 10 birds. the Bad News Bears struck it lucky with a pinfall of 3,247. The winners followed in second with 2,939 and were closely watched by the third place Rough Riders with .',895. Trailing in fourth are the Rams with 2,720. Wendy Gibbings took the high single with 286 in the individual standings and also captured the high triple with 6 points. The high average went to MNancy Kuehl with 189 points. In the men's division Alex Harrett bowled the high single of 319 and Bob' Atkinson took the high triple with 7':5 and the high average wi'h 213 points. At the OMEA-AMEU Annual Meeting held recently at the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Clinton Public Utilities Commission received the Electrical Utilities Safety Association's 9 ii Lowest Accident Frequency Award for having completed 1.4,973 man-hours without a compensable injury. Mr. H.N. Britton, P. Eng., EUSA President, presented the Award Plaque to Mr. J. Wise, Chairman of Clinton Public Utilities Commission. Robert "Doc" Miller and Greg Burns told the News - Record this week that they can get a club going if they can gather enough players. Doc and Greg are having a practice for all eligible boys this Saturday, May 7 starting at 10 a.m. at the .Park, and ask all boys 17 years of age or younger to come out.
