The Chancellors were here!
The rafters of Wesley -Willis
Church are still echoing with
a sound which created one of
the most memorable
weekends in the recent
history of this church.
It all began Saturday at 3
p.m. when their big Grey
Coach rolled into the church
parking lot. After piling their
luggage in the centre of the
Fellowship Hall, ap-
proximately 65 young people,
ranging in ages from early
teens to late twenties,
proceeded to set up sound
systems, move furniture, and
otherwise prepare for their
evening concert and Sunday
morning Celebration of
Service.
Wandering among them at
a slightly slower pace,
looking just a mite weary, but
always ready to listen to a
problem, was the force
behind, and originator of, the
group, the Rev. Paul B. Field,
otherwise known af-
fectionately as "Skip". At 5
p.m. their billets came to
claim their young guests for
dinner and overnight ac-
commodation.
By R p.m. the sanctuary and
gallery were packed, and The
Chancellors in Concert' was
underway. Our ears and
hearts were filled with
refreshing, exuberant strains
from among others. 'Tell it
,.Like. It J.s'.', SimQ11 znd , Wtergroo'fsmeer,
Garfunkle, Jesus Christ Amsterdam. In July of '74 the
Superstar, and Godspell, Chancellors had the Dutch
culminating with the thun- Youth Choir in a reciprocal,
derous music of the band and visit, when, among other
chorus in "Long Live God -
Prepare Ye the Way of the
Lord".
By Sunday morning, word
had spread and the doors of
the Fellowship Hall had to be
opened to accommodate the
enthusiastic congregation.
The entire Celebration of
Service called "Faith In the
Future" was written by the
young people. It was in-
tegrated, at times with
familiar hand clapping, feet
stomping folk music.
As the final chords drew to
a close, the crowd stood for
the second time in less than
fifteen hours, to give this
talented young group and
their leader a standing
ovation. By 2 p.m. after a
sumptuous lunch . and
farewells, they boarded their
bus, and waved goodbye to
their sponsors. A memorable
weekend had ended!
What else can we tell you
about the Chancellors? About
nine years ago Rev. Field
rallied a group of young
people from his home church
in Weston, Ontario together
to form a band and choir.
None were professional
musicians. About eight of that
original group still remain.
By Aug. of 1973 the group
had developed fame and
toured Holland at the in-
vitation of the Dutch
Ecumenical Youth Choir,
Clinton In 4-1I
The sixth meeting of the
Clinton 111 4-H club was held
at Mrs. Murch's home -on
April 14. The meeting was
opened with the 4-H pledge
and our roll call was an-
swered by showing the type of
trim we were using and
telling how we were putting it
engagements, they presented
a joint concert at the O'Keefe
Centre in Toronto. At this
point, they have also made
three records: "Let There Be
Peace," "Shalom" and "On
the Move."
There are still no
professional musicians in the
group. What then is the secret
of their success? Natural
talent and a dedicated leader
yes, but something much
more. Maybe it is their
philosophy for, and joy of life,
that can, perhaps, best be
summed up in these words
from their "Celebration of
Service":
Let's tell the truth about the
world we live in,
Let's ask about the God who
put it here.
Let's tell the truth about our
friends and neighbours,
Let's check the cause of all
our hate and fear.
Let's look at love and find out
where it comes from,
Let's look at life and all that
we hold dear.
Let's check it now before it
quickly passes,
Let's use today
disappears.
