Clinton News-Record, 1977-03-24, Page 15Through the other weeklies
Water, water everywhere
proved to be the newsmaker
in all the weeklies last week.
Blyth firemen responding
to a barn fire ,outside the
village, were forced to make
several detours _ around
concession roads that had
been washed out or flooded by
the spring thaw.
The $35,000 fire included the
loss of 35 dairy cows, two
horses, and a quantity of
stored hay and grain,
reported the Blyth Standard
last week.
High water in the Bayfield
flooded a section of a
MIIIPtrailer park near Seaforth.
'Matters were complicated
with a clogged Tuckersmith
drainage ditch, which should
b have drained the water,
according to a story in the
Huron Expositor. Except for
one home which had its fuel
tank removed by the' rising
water level, there was no
serious damage.
Lucknow . residents also
experienced flooding, reports
the Lucknow Sentinel- but
pumps and experience of past
floodings kept the situation in
control. Water ac-
cumulation in basements in
homes and main street
businesses left quite a Mess to
clean up.
Several cottage and
homeowners living along the
Maitland River Valley
watershed were forced to
evacuate as water levels rose
10 to 12 feet above normal in
some spots. Warm tem-
peratures resulted in ice jams
forming in the river, causing
the water level to rise higher
than normal, according to
last week's Goderich Signal -
()Star.
St. Marys' residents found
themselves wrestling with the
Caters of the Thames River
on the weekend, with the
river winning and spilling
•onto the main streets and into
-.a number of basements. Most
of the stores and homes that
were flooded are regularly
flooded during the spring
thaw and the St. Marys
Journal -Argus reports the
town didn't suffer as much as
in the 1975 flood.
• Last week's flood waters in
Wingham rivalled those of
4, 1975, the year of the worst
spring `flood on record since
the 1940's, says a front page
story_, 'in the Wingham
Ad' ariceTimes. 1 About '189
homes were evacuated as
sump pumps and sandbags
did little to keep rising water
levels out of the town. Some
businesses reported two feet
of water covering the floor.
The Maitland River Con-
servation Authority has been
researching possible flood
storage reservoirs along the
river but their need for too
much land makes them
uneconomical.
Flooding in Wingham also
affected cable TV tran-
smission, knocked out by
excessive water getting into
the cable. Once the trouble
was located special anti -
moisture sealers were in-
stalled to prevent a
recurrence of the problem.
With surrounding victims
falling victim to flood waters,
Listowel continued to stand
high and dry near the
Maitland River. A volunteer
service sponsored by the
Listowel Chamber of
Commerce sandbagged the
town merchants' front doors,
but the water barricades
were not put into use, says the
Listowel Banner.
Except for a few wet
basements, Mitchell, too, has
been left untouched 'by the
waters of the spring thaw,
according to the Mitchell
Advocate. Fullarton Town-
ship, down the road from the
St. Marys has experienced
some flooding but there has
been no serious problems.
A newly erected washroom
in Lions Park, Brussels was
washed away by flood waters
but the village itself suffered
little, reports the Brussels
Post. Flooded basements
were . problems in a few
homes, and only the lower
river flats were water
covered for a few hours.
The joint co-operation by a
number of agencies, volun-
teers, and the volunteer fire
department averted serious
flood damage in Exeter. The
Exeter Times -Advocate
carries a story of the work of
town residents in placing
sand bags along the Morrison
Dams - as waters began to
creep over the barricade.
Meanwhile, west of the town,
several farmers had to move,
cattle from their barns to
escape rising waters. The
only damage to Riverview
Park, where most of the
water fighting took place,
was a foot bridge that was
lost in the, rus ofAo from
the'Ausabl4 lav er'
In Kincardine, a three-
year-old boy drowned in the
swollen waters
Creek. About 60
of Lorne
people took
part in the search for the boy,
whose body was found lying
in the creek labout .800 feet
from his home.
Elsewhere in the Kin-
cardine News a story tells of
two canoeists who were
rescued from a tree after
their canoe capsized in the
chilly waters of the
Penetangore River. The
Kincardine Fire Department
,LINTON NEWS -RECORD, 'MR MARCH 24,.1977«
rescue van arrived at the
scene to find the two men on
shore trying to warm up. The
help of a man walking by the
river had helped the two out
of the water.
