Mapping of hazard lands between urban centres in the watershed will also be .completed in 1977. This year's budget represents a 38.5 percent increase over that of 1976. The good news for member municipalities i's, however, that levies will not increase proportionally, but will be less than 10 percent greater than those of _last year. Provincial grants to ac- complish conservation projects can be claimedby the Authority to make up the difference of the increase. At the same meeting, Lorne Murray of Moorefield and Vince Judge of Listowel were returned to their offices of Chairman and Vice - Chairman. of the Authority. Allan Ross of I-farriston was acclaimed to the position of Conservation Areas Advisory Board Chairman, and Garnet Wright of Londesboro was elected Chairman of the Public Relations Advisory Board. Temperature, soil conditions, duration of freezing periods, direction and velocity of wind, rain and snow cover are all related to •the creation or 'prevention of floods. A report is currently. being compiled by the Authority, to outline a system of com- munications, and to sum- marize a listing of emergency contacts. All member municipalities have been requested to complete a questionnaire that outlines flood prone areas, list ad- dresses and phone numbers of municipal officials who could act as contact persons, and detail inventories of municipal and privately owned equipment that could be used in combating flood conditions. The prevention of disaster could depend on how ;quickly people are informed of flood peaks, and how well prepared they are to mobilize against danger. The Flood . If pensioners fail to re -apply by then, their benefits may be interrupted. Application for the'federal government's Guaranteed Income Supplement, paid to pensioners with limited in - comes, must be made each year. The Department of National Health .and Welfare sent application kits (con- taining informative booklets and application forms) to all Supplement recipients in late December or early January. Two reminders will also be sent before'. the, March., 31 deadline. ,• • As a further way of en- suring that pensioners con- tinue, •to receive their Sup- plement regularly, the department will operate 76 satellite offices in small towns across the country between now and March 31. The dates, hours of -operation and locations of these offices will be announced locally. Pensioners can receive assistance with their Sup- plement applications at these satellite offices as well as at the 10 regional o,'fices in the _provincial capitals and at the four district offices (Mon- treal, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver). During the 1975-76 fiscal year, pensioners received $923 million in supplementary benefits. This was almost one-quarter :of the total, $3.9 billion paid to Old Age Security pensioners during that period. Each month more than half of the two million 014 Age Security pensioners receive some additional payment through the Guaranteed Income Supplement program.' The amount of Supplement paid depends on a pensioner's income. For example, a single pensioner, receivi the basic pension of $141.3 month, would also receive th maximum Supplement of $99.13 a month if his yearly income, `including the Old 0 Age Security pension, was less than $1,720. A married _ .. couple, both pensioners and receiving the maximum Supplement, would be paid a total) of $458.74 a month in pension and Supplement if their combined yearly in- come, including the O.4kS pension, was less than $3,440. The Supplement is reduced* gradually ' by other income until it reaches zero with a total yearly income, inclusive of , the Old Age Security pension, of $4,096 for a single pensioner and $7,664 for a married couple where both are pensioners. i Get your rear in gear.
