Area railroad stations
part of new book
by Shelley McPhee
The thrill of hearing the
train come into the station.
the clanghug of the bells and
the sight of new and in-
triguing faces through the
dark windows was always an
exciting event for people in
small rural commonalties.
Although suck stations in
Seatord. Clinton, Myth and
Govieriek have long since lo
the people sad the mat
engines. they, are still
haunted with history aad
great old stories. Elisib.th
Wilimot • of Toronto' has at-
tempted to capture the spirit
of the old railways of Ontario
in a'bogk called "Meet Me at
the Station''.
The moa -fiction book. which
istogotop-by-
Gage . Toronto. on
October 1. consists of in-
terviews and photographs of
old stations aad people
associated with them.
Although this will be the
first book published by
authoress and photographer
Miss Willman it is the second
one she has written abtibt the
railroad. Sbe has studied the
rail lines since her early
childhood and learned to
appreciate the old stations
through her father who was
an architect. Her family did
much of their travelling by
train and her fatter would
often point out interesting
architecture of various
stations.
Her interest in railways has
take, her across Canada to
study different stations and
people and has taken the last
three years of knocking on
doors to obtain the in-
formation for her book. It bas
brought her many memoirs of
the old stations and steam
engines and the first railway
lantern she received came
"from the Clinton station
master, Doug King.
Although Miss Willmot just
wrote as a bobby in the past,
she now plans to devote all of
her time to writing. While she
still submits articles to
Toronto newspapers and -has
i number of slide shows on
rural and historical topics.
she is also planning her next
project aiid still has many
miles of railroad tales to hear
and write about.
Whether it be an old clock
tower in Seaforth or a log
cabin . opera house in an
abandoned mining town in
Alberta. Miss W ilimot can see
a great tale behind each thing
and will continue her search
throughout Canada to seek
out the past.
