Weston, Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Smith and their son. Lindsay. At
present Gladwyn Westlake has
routes one and three ltd Leslie
Elliott has route two.
Richard Smith began driving
RR 3 (south from Bayfield) in
1918 and then RR I after Charles
Tippet took sick. Mr. Smith
driving north. (RR 1) and Mrs:
Smith . south (RR 3) Their son.
Lindsay, was sworn in when he
was 16'years of age.
Lindsay bought his first car a
1924 Model T Ford from George
Elliott. It presented him with
many problems but he enjoyed it
more than driving a horse.
Lindsay always had a pleasant
greeting for everyone and was
very well liked. He drove until his
last illness in 1973 when Gladwyn
Westlake took over the two
routes.
Leslie Elliott is another of our
long service drivers. He also was
sworn in at age age 16 and drove
the stage to Brucefield for Ed
Weston who also had R R 1 at one
time. He began carrying the mail
on RR 2 in 1937 and. in all these
years. has never Lost a day
through illness.
Today with our plowed roads
we can only imagine what those
long winter drives with horse and
cutter were like.
Sometimes it took over five
r-

hours to cover the route. His first
car for mail carrying was a
Dodge. but the roads were not
suitable for a car at all times of
, the year. Leslie continued to
serve his customers on this
Goderich Township route. trying
not to miss a day but the weather
and roads this past .winter really
presented problems. He hopes
there will not be another like that.

A very wet cake
Dr. and Mrs. Stanbury had
many parties in their big brick
home and the boys used -to love to
play tricks at them. The pantry
had a window to the outside and
the lunch was generally put on a
table just below it. Several of the
boys saw to it that the door was
locked between the parlour and
the kitchen and the pantry
windor up -then they. reached. in
from the outside to puribin what
they thought to be a nice hag
white iced cake gleaming in the
moonlight. But. it was a pan of
milk left there for the cream to
set on top.
Dr. Stanbury tied the dog to the
pear tree to keep the boys from
helping themselves to the pears,
but they got the dog running
around the tree until the leash
was wound up tight - and then you
know what happened.
December 3', 1886

the making.
May 3, 1881
