Bell Voyageur 004 was put into service between the mainland and the island.. on May 19, when it was deter- mined that a ramp for the normal ferry service had become too weak to carry loads of more than 5 tons. Being amphibious, the Voyageur operates from beaches without the need for docks. Operating 8 to 5 week- days, the craft has hauled nearly 400 trucks weighing up to 15 tons. Since it moves on a layer of air captured by its flexible skirt, Voyageur has a top speed of more than 50 miles per hour. It makes the 2% mile tripfrom island to shore in less than five minutes, compared with 25 minutes for the ferry. The cargo duty was performed in temperature as low as -29 C. The draft traveled over water, snow, ice, sand and grass during the operation.
