Bell Voyageur 004 was put
into service between the
mainland and the island.. on
May 19, when it was deter-
mined that a ramp for the
normal ferry service had
become too weak to carry loads
of more than 5 tons.
Being amphibious, the
Voyageur operates from
beaches without the need for
docks. Operating 8 to 5 week-
days, the craft has hauled
nearly 400 trucks weighing up
to 15 tons.
Since it moves on a layer of
air captured by its flexible
skirt, Voyageur has a top speed
of more than 50 miles per hour.
It makes the 2% mile tripfrom
island to shore in less than five
minutes, compared with 25
minutes for the ferry.
Service to the island follows a
six -Montle trial operation with

Orth Shore of Quebec. The
cargo duty was performed in
temperature as low as -29 C.
The draft traveled over
water, snow, ice, sand and
grass during the operation. It
provided a service to the
communities during February
and March which was never
previously feasible.
As a lighter, Voyageur
delivered up to 97 terns of cargo
in one -day to the isolated
communities.
