membership. Over 10,000 beef
producers, and in addition,
nearly, 7,000 dairymen whose
animals also end up as beef.
Hardest hit in the past year
has been the first link in this
chain, the operator with the
cow herd who sells calves. (The
calves arethen fed to slaughter
weights by stockers and feedlot
operators.) Calves that cost
about 60 cents per pound to
produce before any return to
the operator's labor and in-
vestment, have been selling for
35 WO cents since last fall.
A federal stabilizatiOn plan
for mature steers and heifers
has been in place since last
August. The Federation is
calling for an immediate plan
to apply to the cow -calf
business - the weakest link in
the beef marketing dukin.
Me beef industry has been
looking backward for too long,"
Barney Evans told the Com-
missioners, Mr. Evans is a
large cow -calf operator by
Ontario's standards, near
Embro. "As the Dears of
Agriculture and of Veterinary
Medicine were saying recently
about their own departments,
the lack of long-term policies
places serious limitations in
efficient planning."
Evans contended that the
past has been a failure, for it
has brought no more than
survival level incomes for the
producer. "By embarking on a
new course we have nothing to
loseiMiereasoned.
Along with effective income
protection plans for both
slaughter cattle and feeder
calves should go direct*
provisions to discourage the
_cycles of over -production -
inider-production. The •OFA
recommends that marketing
boards be authorized to set
individual quotas on caw -herd
size, based on hist6i4eal
criteria. This is designed to set
a firm upper limit on
production at its source, with
stringent penalties for
violation. To refine the
production control mechanism,
Use syrup
instead of sugar
•Since high sugar prices have
encouraged sugar buyers to
look for alternative sources,
food specialists at the Ontario
Food Cowie'', Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, have
turned to corn syrup as a
substitute for sugar ..used
here in. their recipe for Peach
Make the sauce, pour it over
a scoop of ice 'cream, and you'll
have an extra easy dessert for
an extra busy day.
